So I saw the Kastellan robots and fell in love with them I love their look as they look more like Space Marines than dreadnoughts so I thought why not use them as dreadnoughts?? I have my own Space Marines chapter and I thought it's my own chapter and I can do what I want, I just don't know if there are people out there who are opposed to this. The bases are the same size and I can convert the weapons to make it fit the part. Give them typhoon Missle launchers on their shoulder in place of the current weapon and change one arm for a bolter thing flamer or convert it to a multi melts or lascannon?? I think this would look really cool! I'd paint it green to make it my chapter but I'm not sure if it would go down well at my local store either. I want your opinions

I'm curious how their size compares to Contemptor dreads. They look like they have pretty similar proportions.

Their size is meant to be bigger than a normal Dreadnought but a little bit smaller than a Contempetor.

I thought exactly the same when I first saw them.

With some fluff re why your chapter uses robots instead of entombed marines like other chapters do, or alternatively some fluff re why your chapter's dreads just happen to look a lot like robots but aren't really, you should be fine - there's not really any possible confusion with normal Kastelans.

Personally I'd also be changing that dome head for something a bit more marine-looking

I would say there is already a precedent for them being usable. The old 1st edition Dreadnought was a similar shape, and way smaller. Not all dreadnoughts are the same, the one from space crusade is also different again. You should make your army however you want it. I don't think anyone could claim it was modeling for advantage. You just need to make sure you tell people what they are, in case someone thinks they're supposed to be contemptors.

Even in the worst possible scenario, where you're playing in a tournament and your opponent is being TFG about it. All you'd need to do is bring along a cheapo AOBR dread that you could swap in for any LOS disagreements... Problem solved.

Yeah I'm not keen on the dome head, it looks a bit blank and unfinished. I think what I'd do is remove the face plate (probably just with a circular file), and then mount a marine or GK head inside.

As soon as I get my tax money back it's going right towards the start of a Mechanicus force including the robots. I agree about the heads and have been looking for an alternative, I'm thinking about doing a clear "dome" with the brain from the Skaven Stormfiends inside. It never even occurred to me to make them into Contemptor Dreadnoughts I really like that idea.

As for the OP if there isn't a model advantage for using the robots and you represent the dreadnought weapons correctly I can't see an issue. Are you planning on using the robots to represent robots attached to the chapter or are you going to use them to represent actual dreadnoughts?

Definitely dreadnought material.

I am thinking of making at least 1. Replace the dome head (which is a no-brainer) and give him an assault cannon arm + a shoulder mounted storm bolter or just use the flamer thingy as a heavy flamer.

because that question is, actually, the correct answer IMHO, as I'm looking at the origins of the Robots. The following is taken from the original White Dwarf where they debuted:

Please note the 2nd paragraph, about the "compatibility" of Dreadnoughts and Robots. The then rules reinforce this by using a "Build Points" system shared by both.

This is 1st ed Warhammer 40,000. Now, t's tricky calling back to that era because there's lots of weird stuff back then, like a half-Eldar Ultramarine Librarian.

My 1 suggestion is, as with the above, the Contemptor Dreadnoughts would be the most true to the look & feel, so seriously consider Forgeworld Dreads.

As for painting, it was said in the same article that Robots were made honourary Space Marines due to their role of saving their lives, so it's within reason.

In my case, I'm thinking of using an Iron Warriors Contemptor for real. Like doing something with their Chapter markings, painting that in Ad Mech style.
