I've been wanting to start playing Guard recently. But I'm torn between Vet. Melta Spam, Mech Guard, or a combination of both. Also I need help on what units to get first. Any recommendations would be very helpful. Also one more thing... BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD AND SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!

If you are more leaning towards chaos, just guessing from the bftbg, you can pick up the forgeworld army book The Lost and the Damned. It'll give you options for a chaos IG army and then you can use GW guard models instead of FW ones.

I plan to stay with GW's Guard. I just put bftbg cause I played CSM as my first army. Thank you though!

Heh I wanna start a CSM army for my baddies army.

For me, foot guard works great up to 750 points, moar lasguns, krak nades, priests, MoO, autocannons in squads, orders and more orders, all great fun

Melta spam vets need a ride of some kind, either valks or chimeras. If you want mech, melta spam is not precluded.

you can do all three at once. Meltavets in Chimeras. Then, if you want more melta, one of the hellhound variants (if I recall correctly) has a blast melta weapon, and you can get a IK with that melta cannon as well (for larger point games). Personally, when I played I was a fan of the Kasrkin models, but you may want to find your own niche.

Well one thing to think about starting out, the Wyvern has been called the "Infantry Erase Button" on multiple occasions. It's a fairly inexpensive way to put anti-infantry artillery on the field.

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.

If meltas and mech is your taste, how about this for a 500 pts goal.

CCS, Chimera, 4 meltas
Veterans, Chimera, 3 meltas
Veterans, Chimera, 3 meltas

Personally I wouldn't go all melta, but I do think this would be a solid starting point for a melta-mech guard army.

Be warned that the "Blood for the Blood God" mentality spells disaster for guard!

Why meltas only? Why not plasma?

I have a nice list for an armoured battlegroup(codex am variant not ia1):

Tank commander in a vanquisher w/hull lascannon+second vanquisher w/same

3 unit of vets with 2 meltas, flamer, and ac all in chimeras

2 executioners w/plasma sponsons

2 punishers w/hb sponsons

2 mbts, classic loadout(hull lascannon, hb sponsons)

Comes out to 1860(could drop an ac on a vet unit for 1850)

Salt and pepper with fast attack tanks for 2000 pt games

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Blob guard with hidden power weapons and Commissars were a thing in 5th (looking at Ailoros here), but don't really work in 7th. Wound allocation, who's allowed to hit, and challenges really keep CC guard from coming back.

Most folks will recommend mech guard, or lots of vehicles. They work, don't get me wrong, but it is pricey to do it...and you end up with a parking lot like this :
