Pulsating Possessed Chaos Marine

Hello all. Quick question. Im new to 40k and am going about building a CSM army. I have thrown about the idea of running a fully kited out Demon Prince as my HQ slot (wings.power armor, ML 3 and the Black Mace.). I have been told by a few people at my local shop that melee based Flying Monsterous Creatures are horrible in 7th edition and that im just wasting my points and should go with two ml3 sorc's in terminator armor for the same price. Whats the deal? Are Melee based princes a bad call? They certainly are expensive clocking in at 350 points. Thanks in advance for any tips/help.

Non Nurgle DP are

Jinking on the ground for a 2+ Cover save makes them REALLY hard to kill

But it needs to roll Iron arm or the Eternal warrior one to work properly.

Otherwise anything ST10 will just wreck it.

You also have to properly support them since they are 300+

Other threats need to be running up with him otherwise he can be focused on without repercussion which is bad.

so now that you have to change from flying to skimming and cannot charge the turn you change mode it really isnt great to be a flying CC monster.

You fly around and cannot use your CC abilities, then change to skimming and get shot to bits before you can charge.
.

A prince that is flying and a more support or shooting focused prince works fine

A prince that is skimming and CC focuses is fine, but in that case take DoN and potentially skip the psyker levels to keep him cheap and beasty. The pykser levels are somewhat a waste when 1/3 of your powers go to the Nurgle list

I wouldn't go so far as to say they are a waste. gift of contagion is still good considering you have only 5 toughness. Coupled with the high ws it adds another degree of protection in melee. And possibly instagibbin T4 models. Also 48 inch range is huge, so he could help other parts of the army.
Plaguewind is still an AP2 large blast, that you are pretty safe from considering your 2+ cover save. At least assuming you don't jink before hand. Nurgle rot is free either way and Weapon virus has saved me from leman russ cannons. Don't underestimate gets hot.

Pretty much any biomancy power will be good. Pyromancy will turn you into a horde's worst nightmare and fire shield means you don't even have to jink, so you can still burn stuff. Telepathy is..well telepathy. Shriek is awesome whether he's on the ground or not and invisibility alone is reason enough to roll on it.

But to answer your question. No! melee princes are brutal. A prince of khorne works too with the axe of blind ruin. If you add a grimoire of true names from daemons, then a tzeentch prince can be a real piece of work no matter what gear. And or cursed earth/ fiery form. If your feeling bold you can buff him with boons to get all kinds of goodies. Doom bolt and Breath of chaos are pretty neat on a flying guy. Although I guess slaanesh is kinda iffy on it's own. Although sensory overload can be nice and symphony of pain makes you harder to hit at range. Unfortunately rending won't help your spells.

They're only "horrible" because they nerfed the ability of FMCs to charge after changing flight mode in 7th. This stopped the kinda bs ability for a FMC to Swoop+Run 24+2d6"on its first turn, be protected during the enemy's turn due to the fact that anything without Skyfire had to snap-shot at it, then drop to Glide mode, move 12" and Charge.

Otherwise they're still a Jump Monstrous Creature (ie can move up and over things up to 12") when in Glide mode. Wings are an almost mandatory upgrade, even if you never swap to Swoop mode, since otherwise you're stuck to moving 6" a turn and you'll never get anywhere.
