And he's back...

Phutarf here - yes, he of the mad Cathedral build. Which, for anyone that's been following over the years, is still on going, just I've not updated my blog about it in a while, partly because it's mostly boring reparative painting, but recently because I've been sidetracked onto a project I've had bubbling away in my mind for years. You might recall a certain Death Guard contempt or dreadnought I part built a few years back - well, as a result of a painting competition I decided to pull him out of storage and see what I could do.

Here's the initial build:

As much as I like other interpretations of the dirty, heavily weathered/battle damaged look, I want to keep my nascent DG army a teensy bit 'cleaner', partly because I prefer them that way, partly down to my painting style. So on that basis here's some wip pics of how it's going:

As you might have gathered I like painting green, so there will be a bit more on my DG than you see in the "official" colour scheme, but to break it up have also made a nod to the pre-mortarion days of the Dusk Raiders with one of the knee pads:

(I hate doing free hand...)

And finally a shot of the tub:

Still a LOT more to do on this guy, will update the blog and more pics in my gallery as things progress. And eventually get back to the Cathedral too, promise...

Hey mate!

Ciuncky here, with the super dirty and rusty death guard
Absolutely amazing greens, i think of borrowing the ideas of using a bit more green, love both the front of the hull amd the rear of the lower legs.

And now a bit of out-of-place question.
Would there be any chance for you to cast that super badass scythe you did for the contemptor? It's what carched my eye some time ago, i found the image by mistake on Google

Then again, if you'd want to have a super-unique contemptor and don't want to share the beauty, i totally get it

Subbed! Keep up the amazing work

Great work here. I really like the enamelled but chipped look you've given the paint, and it's created almost an "old tile" look on some of the green parts of the armour. Very nice, indeed!

Lol thanks Stormwall - you know me and green. A different one to the Carhedral but equally as nice to do

Azazelx - if you like this enamelled look, check out my cathedral blog (currently languishing in page 8) - there are other green glass/enamelled bits there

ciuncky - sorry mate, the scythe is a true one off, although aside from the custom blade (which is just shaped plasticard) the rest is repurposed Dreadknight parts, so technically anyone could recreate it - provided you can get all the bits and don't mind fiddling about with them!

Oh, and you can never have enough green in my opinion

Hey Phutarf,

No worries man. Now that it's morning (and weekend!) my brain is back at full capacity. Realise it was a quite stupid request anyway.

Still, amazing work. Can't wait to see the scythe painted

The green is truly awesome. Some deep red as a second accent colour (like on the Dread) works really well.

If I could paint green the way you paint green, every model I owned would be a fabulous looking green! Good work!

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

Thanks all for the encouraging words (Yez, I know Warboss, I'm being distracted..!)
Another small update for you on the contemptor:

As for the green, it's pretty much the colours suggested by FW on their Death Guard paint scheme: castellen green base over a black undercoat, Elysian green layer. However, I'm using Agrax Earthshade and Brown ink to shade, and Ushtabi bone for edge highlighting, and finally Lamenters Yellow glaze to bring everything together and accentuate the green...

More soon!

Thanks for stopping by and the kind words. There won't be a chaos variation tinmechworkshop, as my fledgling DG army is pre heresy - on that note, an update on the contemptor paint job:

Decided to go with full Dusk Raiders red right arm. I figure this guy has been around since forever, worked his way up through the ranks and made it to Deathshroud duty before being interred, so was allowed to reference this by keeping the red arm along with the knee pad.

Obviously, tons more to do!

Absolutely amazing mate!

You could even say he's one of the troops sent to Istvaan III, as some of them decided to repaint their armour as Dusk Raiders.

Keep it up! Keen no see how that sick scythe turns out, should be a nice contrast with the red hand

A few update pics for you:

Who knew contemptor arms had so much fiddly detail that needed painting?! Trying to get a grimy, worn look without going all out with damage:

And yes, EVERYTHING is painted, even the bits you won't be able to see:

Right arm has also had some work done to it:

And finally another project I've made a start on, may ever so slightly converted Abaddon. Cast was a bit of an issue, and there's part of a leg I need to do some drastic greenstuffing on, but I think he'll scrub up nicely as DG:

Thanks for the comments guys. The Contemptor really is a labour of love - although at this point its bordering on hate - the way I paint means everything just takes AGES to do, and combined with trying out chipping/damage for essentially the first time - and painting it all by brush, rather than using a sponge/other techniques means it feels like I'll never finish him. But, has to be done by the end of the month for the competition...

Vim: the oxidisation is simply using the GW technical paint, name of which escapes me ATM, sorry...

The finished Contemptor - apologies for the dodgy pic, trying to get the scythe in was a bugger
