So, the mounted Lord-Celestant is friggin' cool, no arguments from me there.

However, I was playing Final Fantasy VI just now, that's FF III for you old timers, and I encountered this monster in Narshe in the World of Ruin, the Test Rider:

I'm not accusing GW of anything, but you have to admit they look reasonably similar. It's actually kinda nifty.

Edit: Probably should mentioned, FFVI was launched in '94.

To be honest that's just a dragon version of demigryphs. Demigryphs were glorious, but they needed something even bigger for their Sigmarines, and Sigmar is buttbuddies with star god Void Dragon GREAT STAR DRAKE, so they wanted lizard-themed mounts for them. Because dragons.

Spoiler:
Needs more metal.

I know? Isn't absolutely crazy? And I bet that they totes STOLE the idea of golden armor too!

I'm not really saying GW took anything from FF they owe about as much to that series as they do the Princess Bride. Sometimes it's just fun to find totally random and unrelated lookalikes. If you can't have a little fun at the expense of a toy soldier and a bitmap on a forums about games, I don't know what to tell you.

I don't think they look similar at all except for the colors, which are just standard warm-cold contrasting colors. The GW mini looks like John Blanche's old Empire designs dialed up to 12 (they were already at 11) placed on top of a generic dragonish monster with GW brand tusks. The video game characters look like golden Samus Aran riding blue Blanka/Hulk 2099.

Unfortunately i have to disagree. After studying the picture for 30 seconds, i'll agree its a slightly draconic looking quadraped. That said, here's some differences:

1) Toe structure is different; the sprite has a large three toed hind leg, the front leg actually looks like four toes, and are different scales. By contrast the GW one is same scale and toe structure for front and hind legs.

2) Tail - sprite has a cross spike aspect, GW has a typical spade structure aspect

3) the quadraped : One's armored, one's not.

4) One rider has a staff that goes to the ground, the other has a hammer with haft that doesn't go past the shoulder of the mount.

5) Quadraped's horn structure is different all the way around.

6) One has a mane, one does not.

7) Riders armor and helm are completely different, though yes, similar armor tone.

8) One rider has a cape, the other does not.

9) one rider has a stirrup / saddle arrangement, one does not.

Past it being a ridden quadraped, I don't much see it. The sprite says "demon" to me more than dragon. Sorry, i'm just not seeing enough similarities to call "inspired by", let alone copied.

Shred City.

It's just an armored warrior riding a quadrupedal creature carrying an elongated weapon.

Probably the second-most generic design in any fantasy property in history, following a spellcaster in a robe.
