Didn't see this posted yet - it came as news to me but an email just landed in my inbox from the team behind Skirmish Sangin who are launching their kickstarter campaign for their Maalintii Rangers battle book:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1984924606/the-day-of-the-rangers?ref=nav_search

Based on the events of Black Hawk Down and the like. Looks good to me, I will probably back this as Skirmish Sangin is one of my favourite modern games and a good laugh to boot. Plus, I think it will translate well to the Mogadishu/Somali conflict. They are off to a good start with the miniatures and the terrain looks good to so I will have to check out the supplier there.

Thanks for the heads up - I've been meaning to pick up the rules for a while now and this seems like as good an opportunity to do it as any.

Do you know if their zombie game is going to be handled via KS as well? I'm sure that's the rule set that's finally going to make me paint my Stryker rifle platoon and the gazillion zombies lurking in my hobby closet.

Not sure - it is mentioned in the email detailing the Kickstarter but just says 'Coming Soon' so I'm unsure as to if that means Kickstarter or not.

How easy would it be for new players to pick up? I'm always on the lookout for easy to learn rules systems. The fact that there's a zombie version coming soon certainly caught my attention as well.

The zombie game (Outbreak?) is being released at Gencon - so no Kickstarter. The marketing for the zombie game seems to be a bit lacking. Two weeks before release the first I'd heard about it was on a podcast. I went looking for information and found almost nothing. The fact that they don't even mention that it's going to be available at Gencon in that e-mail says that this trend continues.

I just had a look around.. they put up a blog for the zombie game - http://skirmishoutbreak.blogspot.co.nz/

Seemed quite easy to learn to me anyway. I didn't have any issues flicking through the rulebook and having a bash at it and from what I can gather, the rules are widely respected in the community as a whole; they consistently get good write-ups and reviews.

I did a mini battle rep and write-up here for the interested:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/587419.page#6679441

At the moment, my gaming space is all packed away awaiting a house move but I am hoping to have something set up in the next few weeks so might have a bash at Skirmish Sangin - I got myself some nice French Foreign Legion troops that I am itching to use.

I looked at Skirmish Sangin a while back, but wasn't so sure about all the tables. The morale one for instance seemed at a glance like soldiers would crap themselves and run for the hills at any loud noise. That and I'm not sure how well it adapts to non-standard squad build ups. For instance I'd rather use the same rules for multiple settings, including suedo post-apocalyptic ones, where having random weaponary is kind of a thing. Thus the morale rules also wouldn't translate too well to settings where say mutants appear (if a guy throws himself into cover immediately as bullets come his way how would he react if a tank like mutant came his way).

Hmn, are the zombie rules based on the same core ruleset? It'd be interesting to see how they've adapted those for that setting. I'm now intending to use the This is Not a Test rules for my Fallout stuff, but I'm on the look out for modern and zombie rules. The zombie rules in particular could be adapted to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. setting too if they maintain a resemblance of squads, just as long as they're a bit more ad-hoc.

Hi Wyrmalla,

As one of the authors I think you didn't understand the morale rules.

Let me see if I can help. Basically morale acts in a number of ways one is to model supressive fire. Each character has a morale rating, if he is fired at he takes a morale marker and must make a moral check the following round. If he gets any additional morale markers from other fire, or some weapons do more than 1 marker, each one gives a -10% to his morale after the first one.

So lets imagine a Veteran soldier who has a 75% morale, who has 3 morale markers. He must make a morale roll test at the beginning of his new activation. A Vets Morale is 55%, however if he is in cover, lets say medium cover for the sake of argument he gets +30% bonus and if he has any friendlies within 6" of him they all count as +10% so using the example say he is within 6" of 3 others he then gets 30%. Adding all of these together he has 55%+30% +30%=115%. Even over 100% he still rolls as 00 is a fail. Now take the same guy without the cover and the friendlies if he failed his 55% morale roll he would roll on the failed morale table. on a 1-5 he drops prone, 6-9 he is pinned and 10 he retires 12".

So as you can see, its not like you imagined. if you have any other questions or anyone has for that matter I am more than happy to answer them.

cheers
Colin

Are Outbreak and Day of the Rangers completely standalone, or are they more along the lines of expansions?

Will Outbreak function using a squad system, or will it be looser? Can we expect a wider variety of weaponry in Outbreak? I noticed that some of your survivors have been designed purely for melee.

for Maalintii Rangers you need a copy of Skirmish Sangin to play, but on the KS all pledges over $30 gets a PDF copy of Skirmish Sangin. Outbreak is a completely standalone game, the only figures we have show to date are Ragers, Ragers are Zeds in the first 48 hours they are fast mad and mean as hell after 48 hours they revert to traditional shambler style zombies. We are launching Outbreak this weekend at GENCON. In terms of weaponry we use generic weapon types so all weapons can be used. Will Outbreak be KS'd at this point we don't know.

I hope that helps.

Cheers
Colin

Stretch goal 2 is for the Opfor - ie Somalis, we hope to have a render of one very soon to show you. We are creating 16 unique Somali for the second stretch goal.

cheers
Colin

Second, I pledged right away for the above reason!

Pheww, sounds like a math lecture, maybe I should switch to minis only...
I am kidding - I will get the rules since I am always on the lookout for good rule sets, but the above explanations seems a bit complex for my taste.

cheers and keep on gaming, Agis - http://www.adpublishing.de

I at the 100 funny money level, but will porbably switch things up/around when we see what the stretches are like.

Its pretty simple:
Base morale value, subtract negative modifiers, add positive modifiers, roll dice and compare to final value.

I have to say, having played the game a couple of times, that the morale calculations are pretty straightforward and simple to work out and are a fairly elegant way of combining the effects of both rate of suppressing fire and troop quality on how said troops react.
