Quick question, what do you think is age of sigmars new setting inspired from, what I mean is that WHFB was a renaissance/industrial revolution setting (with mix and max other things like new world lizzies) so what is age of sigmar, I kind of see it as the age of heroes (Greek hero cults, Gilgamesh, Ramayana) you know everything is epic and grand and over the top.. Like Beowulf mythos... What do you think? And please stay on topic...

It seems the most in line with the Dungeons and Dragons universe to me. I'm not sure about real world inspiration.

It seems to target the same market as the Marvel movies to me. Big heroics, vast dimensions of weirdness to explore, cosmic/divine entities warring through increasingly powerful pawns...even the timeline is super sized.

It's Norse mythology meets Michael Bay. 'nuff said!
Chaos is as Chaos was - basically unchanged from WFB. Khorne slays and collects skulls, Nurgle spreads pestilence. No new inspirations here.
Sigmarines are power fantasy for young boys - a whole army of Mary Sues on IDDQD. Literally - read the first novella. Other than that, Sigmar is Odin with a sprinkling of Thor, Azyr is Asgard, Sigmaron is Valhalla, Eternals are the Einherjar. Even the realms correspond somewhat - Aqshy as Muspelheim etc. It's all lifted almost verbatim.

Age of Sigmar is very nearly an exact copy of Norse mythology, at it's most basic level.
I'd recommend a wikipedia search for Norse cosmology, but the short version is that Sigmar is a stand-in for Odin and Thor, with his hammer Ghal Maraz standing in for Thor's hammer Mjolnir.
The nine mortal realms of Age of Sigmar roughly correspond with the nine worlds of norse mythology, although GW has left out the idea that all worlds are a branch on an enormous cosmic tree of life - maybe they'll add that later. To compare how close they are, the novel "Gates of Azyr" features the Stormcast departing from Sigmar's realm, the heaven-like Azyr, to attack the realm of fire, known as Aqshy. In Norse mythology, the name of the home of the gods is Asgard, with the male gods who live there being referred to as "Aesir." In turn, Norse mythology has a fire world called Muspelheim, where fire demons dwell, and giants who consider the Aesir their most hated enemies, with legend that they plan to burn down Asgard in the end times.
The more you dig into it, there's a realm of the dead, a realm for high elves, for dwarfs, for wood elves, for dark elves, you name it, the Norse literally used these terms, because these creatures were part of their mythology.
It's a little odd that, after all GW has been through, they could choose another public domain basis for their new universe. For what it's worth I'm greatful, as it means there is something under the vague andmaybe too-open-ended realms we've so far been presented with.

Darn, we were typing at the same time. Well, that's two of us calling out Norse mythology as the basis for all of this.
Except, for proper Michael Bay-ing, this game needs blast markers for all of the explosions - they must be saving them for the expansion, where we'll get detailed rules for always filming at dusk as the sun sets, and spinning the camera around heroes until the audience gets dizzy.

I am wikipediang norse mythos as we type so I was not far, its very much the age of heroism, heroes being heroes in epic battles against demons, monsters and gods...personally I like my Greeks (I have been reading a lot about hero cults of greece ) I might make a band of thebes inspired elves (lions everywhere ) squad after I finish my steam tank and engineer on mecha norse
and did they not already establish that they are surrounding a flying twin tailed comet or something like that... so its not a tree of life...

If it's really that inspired by Norse mythology, I'd like to see more of the playful, humorous side. And crows. More crows.

I believe it's basically one of those new age fantasy worlds that are so popular right now. Endless Legend comes to mind with their unusual sci-fi approach, unusual factions and a strange, alien world.
AoS is, in a way, similar to that - you get strange, exotic realms, unconventional design, a very different kind of storytelling focusing on different things than before - there definetely is a trend like that in fantasy - apparently people got tired of fantasified 15th century Earth and Tolkien clones and want something unusual, GW seems to have hopped onto that train.
I can also see a bit of the multiverse inspiration from Magic: The Gathering, with each planet (plane) being a very different, specific realm with it's own ecosystem, magicks and special traits just like the realms in AoS, but rather than having a couple wizards jump back and forth between them there are portals open to everyone that bind them like Stargate's... stargates.

I also agree with Norse mythology, but more specifically, the version depicted by Marvel Studios's Thor films.
It's the weird "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" sort of vibe. You can sort of see that in the miniatures, but it becomes even more apparent when reading the Age of Sigmar book.

Golden age of mythology. It's not revolutionary but it works. All legends are derived from ancient Sumerian myths anyway.
