I just want to see if yhis would be a viable way of doing things. Would you be more willing to go to a) normal theater, or b) one whose tickets costs twice as much money, but the food and drink comes free with the ticket?

A, you shouldn't be eating or drinking as it makes it harder to hear dialogue when watching a movie.

Where's option C:

Tickets cost twice as much but I can reserve a seat, order good food and booze?

I'm pretty much JUST option C at this point.

I'm actually with Frazz on this one... I'm a big fan of the Theater Pub concept, I just don't really like how they are typically a "second run" theater.

The problem that I have with your option B, is that you don't really outline how the food/drink is decided... Is it an army chow hall style concept, where you have a set number of options, and only those options, plus a cup to get your own drink... OR is it more like the theater pub, where you get your ticket, choose from a fairly full menu?

Amazon Prime occasionally runs movies while they are in theater that you can rent for the old Blockbuster/Hollywood Video rates (like 4 bucks for 24 hour rental or similar) The problem I have with the way that goes, is it's usually not movies I actually WANT to see in the theater, whether it's because reviews are poor, or because I've never heard of the movie in the first place.

We have an Alamo Drafthouse near here and its awesome, especially for kids and teens. They play all the new movies, and almost always have events for already released movies (stuff like marathons, benefits, etc). They even do stuff like have actors from the movies come out and do a little schpiel. For example, they got the dude who played Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite come out for a re-showing of that film. And there's always stuff like that going on there.

And lots of beer on tap, as well as half-decent food on order.

(I'm more like hotsauceman...I got to the regular theater for matinees so I can have the whole theater to myself basically)

How about option D: Higher priced tickets with no one under 21 allowed in, good food, clean & comfy recliners, and a cellphone blocker so no one's phones will work till the movie is over.

I think cellphone blocking is illegal in the US.

However, I've found that $15 tickets generally does the same thing. These theaters will also get someone to stop phone talkers.

Puget Sound area of Washington (as the info under my avatar reflects )

And I'm not aware of anything like that in this area, definitely no "chains" of theater pubs

I live in London and cinema tickets regularly are around £16-18 each. You're kidding yourself if you think I'm paying double that for anything. It's aleady at least £30 for two of us to go... And that's why I bring my own drink.

Indeed.

There are three very nice theaters in my general vicinity, including an Alamo, and I chose it as often as I can. The tickets all cost within a quarter of each other, so why not go to the one where I can also get beer and loaded french fries delivered to my chair?

We kind of have this near me, The chairs are big and comfy, only 2 to a section with a little space between each one. They have decent movie theater food, but you get a discount at a local place with your movie ticket so you can eat after. And its 21+ with alcohol, just a 2 drink max, which I think is a good idea since I dont want some drunk loud person ruining the movie.

Ensis Ferrae since you are in the area it may be something to check out.

Edit: If you google "seefilm bremerton vip" and go to images it has a picture of the chairs with the little table thing etc

Generally speaking I go with my wife ($18 tickets) and we get popcorn and soda ($15 soda, $8 popcorn, $24 total). So, a plan where we paid twice as much for the tickets but got free concessions would be slightly less expensive.

Of course, theaters would never do this, because they make all of their money from concessions and very little from ticket sales until the movie has been out for a while. Studios take around 90% of ticket sales for the first weekend and then the ratio drops from there. This plan would run them out of business.

We don't have an Alamo Drafthouse nearby, so that's sadly not an option. The one in New York opened right after I moved away. Figures.

I love going to the movies. I go once a week and the only limiting factor is how many good movies are out. Sometimes I'll go twice in a weekend. It works out really well for me because my "weekend" is currently Monday and Tuesday nights, and if you go to the movies at 10:30pm on a Tueday night you're virtually always the only one in there. My local theater also has a pretty decent loyalty program where there are constant free tickets/soda/popcorn coming.

Assuming the refreshment was of reasonable quality, B.

I'd be MORE willing to pay a much higher price to have no one under 21 admitted, no parties greater than 3 admitted, and absolute silence required.

As H.B.M.C. mentioned, we have a thing in Australia where you pay about double for a normal for a ticket. You don't get any free food, but you do get a much nicer chair and access to a decent menu of cooked food that they'll bring in to you during the movie.

It's a bit of a rip, but as a pretty lazy way to have a date night, it works pretty well.

I wouldn't go for any kind of thing where the food comes with the ticket, as I'm guessing that means some kind of buffet thing, which is about the worst food to serve during a movie. Finger food and pub grub is the way to go.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. We just have normal theater here in NZ, with that thing that HMBC and Sebster were talking about in some cinemas.

Also good god you guys pay a lot for your tickets. I can get $10 tickets here in Dunedin. Perks of being a university town I suppose. Even the "expensive" cinema is only $15 NZD.

We're watching you... scum.

I'd be more ok with Gold Class if it still had the menu that you paid for, but standard popcorn/drinks was included in the ticket price.
