I just got into Warhammer 40k and i decided to go with Eldar and i need your opinion if this is a decent army or should i scrap it.

-10 Dire Avengers
-1 Eldar Autarch (upgraded to about 140 points)
-5 Eldar Rangers
-1 Illic Nightspear

With this i have 150 points left and im not sure what units i should buy with it. I also feel like im being too greedy by getting 2 HQ's but i enjoy having the range from illic nightspear.
What should i change and/or add to my army?

Don't want to be a downer but in this game units sometimes suck really bad.

My honest advice, don't but anything yet. Play the game with cardboard and see what you think is worth taking. So many new players buy into this game spending a fair amount of money on a cool theme only to find out the army/unit/combination they spent money on sucks.

pick a different army, Eldar are way to cheesy right now

I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I'm pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you mess with me, I'll kill you all

I figure doing enough research on units is good enough and makes me confident on what units to buy.

I see, well if that is the case this place is a good start on.

Read through that, give it a try.

Good luck. Hopefully 8th edition doesn't come out soon haha.

Broken link...
I'm in a similar situation about getting back into the game for the first time in about 10 years. I want to play a pure imperial knight army but am hesitant due to people saying they're no fun to play against.
Eldar have a similar issue at the moment so I'd seriously ask your regular opponents their thoughts and if they'll be poo about playing against eldar.
As Swastakowey said cardboard is a good way to demo. Play it against a proxy 600 of Sm.

I think theres a good amount of races that people wont play against because they think they are overpowered. i can understand why wave serpant could be overpowered though.

Wave serpent hardly op real cheesemongers run allied reavers.
Main issue people have with elfs is the d weps, 30+ bikes or steal price of wrightknights.

In small pt games you need numbers.
I'd take 2 DA units in Serpents and add an HQ.
Serpents are hard to take down at this pt level.

The Serpents should have tl scatterlaser, underslung shuricannon, and holofield.
Not sure if you need an Autarch. A Farseer will be the better support character.
I'd squeeze in some Jetbikes.

Still good.
Keep them at arm's length (> rapid fire range) and shoot them.
Serpents, DA, and Jetbikes enough shots to take down Warriors and Immortals.

Okay so i done a little bit of thinking and i found out how op the eldar can be which is really starting to make me feel like i need to pick a different army (because i dont want to be "that guy.")

I was thinking to change to the Dark Angels or Daemons. My only concern being, if i pick Daemons, do i also have to play chaos marines? or are the Daemons good enough by themselves?

If you like Eldar just play Eldar. 40K is an imbalanced game so you may as well go for what you like. Just tone down your lists and talk things out with your opponent.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.

Agreed. This is an expensive hobby, so play what you want to play and paint what you want to paint.

40k is an easy game to break. Eldar can just do it easier, and accidentally. If you make an effort to build a list to the power level of your opponents, fun can be had by everyone.

But play the army you like. The hobby is expensive, and you will spend too much time painting to settle for something your are “meh” on.

As you are starting out just pick a theme from a craftworld and run with it... if you are not a cheesy player then you will not have a problem... at 700 pts if you are bringing a knight or bikes you are going to be defaulted as "that guy" so pick something that you think will be fun to play and go...

Get two wave serpents, a box of Jetbikes and a Farseer on a Bike. This gives you an excellent core to build around. You want some walkers with tons of guns? Get those. You like zombie ninja elf robots? Get Wraithguard. Do you like artillery? Vaul's Wrath support batteries my friend. Buy a WK for that next LGS tournament and magnetize it.

I also made another list to see which one i like better

2nd list:
-illic Nightspear=140 points
-1 Wave serpent with holofield,scatter-laser, and shuri cannon=140 points
-5 Rangers=60 points
-10 Dire Avengers=130 points
-2 Dire Avenger Exarch/twin-linked shuri catapult=30

In a way i like this list better because it offers more firepower and it gives me the option to assassinate their HQ very quickly. illic also has hatred+preferred enemy (necrons) which is going to be my main opponent.

Eldar have a fantastic gaming history as well as rich background, it's easy to choose an army that's well balanced and interesting to play without going overboard.

It's true there's a lot of prejudice against Eldar on the internet, but it's easy to avoid by being a reasonable player. Your list looks great for a starter style, enjoy!

One problem with this list is a lack of AV fire. You can try to glance down anything AV12 or less, but higher then that and you are going to have issues. You could try putting brightlances on the WS to shore up that weakness.
