Walk into Games Workshop and look at the shelves.

I tend to find that helps.

I have the hard backs of Space Marines, Dark Angels and Eldar. I looked at the 40k website and I'm pissed.

What the hell Games workshop. I don't have the money to replace 3 freaking codexs.

And Necrons. At $70 a piece thats $280 for codexs. Man what a freaking scam. Are people not buying codex's now?

The price of the Codex's is really not that outrageous. Expensive still sure, but a full hardback glossy printed book like that will always be at least $40 to $50.

That said, I only own 1 current codex for my armies. Otherwise I use Battlescribe to make lists. Easier and more convenient, and also FREE!

Except Battlescribe isn't always correct, or have all the relevant rules. It's a good reference but it is not and will never be a replacement for the codex.

Frankly, pick the army you want to work with currently and buy that codex. In a perfect world there would be alternatives, like softcover books without the fluff and crap 'pictures' that we are getting now. But it's not a perfect world and unless you acquire them illegally or make do with the alternatives that are available, you have to buy them. I take it you took a break from the game?

to be fair the dark angels were in serious need of reform.

and they turned and burned through every other army's books at a pace of about 2 every month or so some armies only getting a week's release window for a clamshell hq, a codex, a painting guide, and some maelstrom of war things. the dark angels and grey knights specifically got exactly 2 weeks of releases between them. the imperial knights got exactly 3 days for release. they turned and burned like a motherlover and now we have new army books.

also the cypher dataslate was sort of updated (though you could just as easily edit the old one if you own it, it just changed him granted dark angles hatred CSM to PE CSM.

the eldar book was needed so they could remove the harleys from their army so they could make them their own army and sell more new plastic and another codex.

the space marine book was needed because the eldar became so silly broken they literally made people stop playing them (some people still do refuse despite getting new army books). and if the space marines didnt want to continue playing sales of marines would have dropped off the map like a stone. dark angels were then overhauled lazily by copy pasting whole chunks of the marine dex, and then fired off so fast if you buy a limited edition da codex you can see the skid marks still from where it left the rifled barrel cannon they shot it out of

Pretty normal prices for coloured hardbacks. Last time I looked at codexes before this 7th edition was 3e and 4e books. I always prefer hardbacks over paperbacks no matter what the books are about and will pay the extra bucks for it. I'm glad GW made the move to hardbacks. The cover isn't only there to allow someone to judge the entire book by it's looks it also protects the pages inside....which is good for me as I've had my books since January and my covers took a beating already from being carried around in my pack sack soo many times.

Go to GW's website and look at the front cover of the relevant Codex. If the cover matches that one it is a current Codex.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts

Codicies. Just saying. Just because GW spells it wrong, doesn't mean it's the correct way to spell it. I am surprised GW didn't use the "TM" beside it.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

U Wot M8?

DA was the 2nd codex of 6th, and they have been desperate for a new 'dex for ages. Imperial knights had their 6th ed 'dex replaced in less than a year, SM and Eldar had theirs for less than 2 years (and really didn't need to be redone at all). The only "old" dexes left are CSM (which, like DA desperately needs an update, and has needed one since about 3 months after its release) and isn't on the horizon at all, Tau, which is apparently due in september and was broken as hell on realease and is still solid today and Daemons, which are also not currently scheduled for release anytime soon (not that they need the help though as they're still top tier).

Virtually every single DA player has been screaming for a new (decent) codex for years, and they just recieved one like, 2 months ago. There's no room to complain about replacing the DA dex.

It was released in January 2013. You've had 2 1/2 years to use it. That's 30 months. If you left the game and are only now coming back, don't be surprised that stuff has changed or been made obsolete. Your models are still valid, so you're only out the cost of a codex. When you have (judging from your signature) 14 armies, replacing codices should not be a surprising turn of events.

Besides, many would argue that the old 'dex was almost unusable anyway, so you didn't miss much.
