Now that this is an option for marine squads I'm wondering if the 10 points is worth the extra leadership. I know they get the extra attack as well but for Tactical Marines and some scout builds that doesn't seem to useful.

I rarely find it to be useful as marines aren't really lacking in the leadership department and +1 a isn't doing much.

I don't think that veteran sergeants are worth it for any shooting squads. Sometimes if I have spare points I upgrade my close combat scout squads to have the veterans. CCW scouts should be cheap imo.

Any time I've given a sarge a special melee weapon, I'll give him the Vet upgrade, but any other time, I'll use the points towards another marine.

I'd rather spend that 10 points on a combi-weapon.

That's what i was thinking. I missed all of 6th edition so this codex is a bit a change with so many things becoming options.

I've found the vet upgrade is really only worth it if the sgt is going to get into close combat and is equipped to do so. I modeled a couple of whitescar veteran biker sgts with powerlances. super fluffy, and okay on the tabletop. They weren't great, but they didn't have to be, considering how powerful the rest of 6th ed whitescars were

I've had devastator squads walk off after taking losses, so I understand the usefulness of the Vet upgrade; however, I usually put the sergeant in the front to protect my heavy weapons so the 9 leadership wouldn't help once he dies...

Skip it. Having a single wound model gain +1 A at the painful cost of +25pts (including Power Weapon) in a squad of meh just doesn't make sense to me. I'd rather throw on a Plasma Pistol and fire Bolt and Plasma at pistol range. Gunslinger Sergeants make much more sense to me.

The Leadership is even more meh since ATSKNF. Useful against Psychic Scream, Pinning and other Ld based abilities, but not by much.

It makes no sense giving a Sgt anything in a shooty squad and even less in a CC squad. The shooty guy will probably be out of range anyway, and the CC guy will have to die in the first challenge automatically losing you all his stuff.

Are you trying to get into assault with the squad? Then make him a veteran and give him a power fist or axe. Doubly so if you plan on sticking an Independent Character in the unit, as the IC can protect the sergeant from challenges from other squad leaders while the sergeant can protect the IC from challenges from scary things.

I like having a veteran sergeant or two in my tactical squads just to provide some punch in assault if I need it, but most of my sergeants are standard dudes to keep things cheap. The best upgrades for sergeants are combi-weapons and melta bombs, and veteran status doesn't make either of those better.

Veteran sergeants are worth it if you plan to assault. Otherwise, don't bother.

They're barely worth it even in an assaulting squad. I always buy the upgrade for an Assault Centurion squad though as they're low on attacks.

Were they to actually get decent bonuses like Exarchs I'd definitely purchase them.

A Vet Sarge with a fancy weapon of some sort seems like a great idea for a choppy squad.
And neither seems like a remotely reasonable idea for a shooty squad.
Then again, I could be wrong.

Id say vet sargeants are only worth it when you're chapter tactics assist in cc. Salamanders & Black Templars. Otherwise its wasted points, because most sargeants dont help with shooting.

Funny enough i was thinking about this earlier today. Id say it would be more useful at 5 points. Although power weapons would still be an iffy choice unless they too were reduced by 5 points. That would still make a 1 wound meq cost more than a terminator, & we know how good they are.

Well I've got to admit that points wise, I'd say not worth it...

...and I put them in almost every unit I can. Why? Because I like having awesome sargs with PFs and meltabombs. Sometimes its fun to make the unit you want, not the unit that mathematically is best for the points.

I’ll put them in assault squads, but that’s basically it. Unless I’ve got the spare points kicking around.

Sometimes if I’ve got a bike squad that’s acting as an ad-hoc command squad for a mounted HQ, I’ll upgrade the sarge as well.

Not worth it just for the Ld. But worth it if I need the extra attack. Plus if you are getting into CC, you will more likely need the extra leadership anyway.

I’m just glad I can give non-vet sarges gear these days.
