Hello,

Some time ago we had an honour to paint several Black Templar models - the models were very characterful and their owner assembled them in very personalized way, which was going to be further enhanced by painting - take a look how we've done them!

First of them were Centurions (you may see them in our gallery) as well.

Soon more of them will appear, but how do you like the trio you can see now?

Not bad, but not Black!

The gray highlights are a little too much. Excellent paint job tho.

Agreed - great paintjob in general but way too much highlights ... there is no Black Templar feel at all.

When thinking about the paintjob and the overall mood for models, we thought about that particular scene from the Damnation Crusade comic:

The highlights are more a bluegrey (old GW shadowgrey) than a subtle grey as per the artwork no?

I think they look fantastic! I love adding a little bit of "color" to black like this!

They look stunning! I like the way the black is done - it looks like really shiny black armour. Great job

I love them. I think black done like this totally works at this scale.

These look great.

They look amazing, gives an organic feel to the usual flat black armor. Don't know why so many are against it. Love it!

I think it's come out a lot better on the marines than the centurions, they look fantastic.

I have to say it is like a hugely lightened up version of "Payne's Grey" with a value of about 4 on the Denman Ross shade value scale.
It is very much a true blue-grey.
My "opinion" is that it is not toward a black until it is at a shade value of 6 or more.
Still looks nice though.
I still have not brought myself to do airbrush highlights to troops (undercoat mainly) but this style is tempting me.
Not masking the legs to paint the base is a great sneaky way to dirty-up the figure in a realistic way.
The chapter symbols on the drop pods could use a little something, where is the pride? (Black, silver or gold/brass?)
Great weathering on the "bottom" of the pod doors but the interior looks rather muted / no detail other than harness highlight... it could just be in shadow.
I think my favorite part is the gradient of the white / cream Centurion shoulder pads: if I could get that for all Templar pads it would be a jaw dropper.
I think red instead of black on the other side of the mechanicus gear-skull symbol on the back of the Centurion would look a bit nicer: the deep black makes it disappear, or go with a little more bold edge highlighting.
Yep, even with an awesome paintjob I still hate that center loin-plate. I cut mine out of the model and center the side plates on the top of the legs: looks much better.
You would never know it but I think these look awesome, it is these small things that show up even more due to the quality of the paint work.

Hello,

After some time, new models were done to bring reinforcements for the Crusade – the Dreadnoughts join the fray!

You can see more pictures in our gallery

Does they fit the Black Templars “feel”?

I really like this approach on black. Black is such a hard color to paint and there are many techniques on how to achieve a "black" effect. This one looks spot on to me.

Got milk?

All I can say about painting is that VMC tastes much better than VMA... especially black...

I agree that they are a bit on the grey/dark blue side but the overall effect looks very well.

Personally I think they look excellent...but that's probably because I find Black Templars to be drool-puddling boring. Anything to detract from another black with grey edge highlight templar force is fine with me.

They look excellent.
