Silent A I'd assume given that the name change is purely to try and make the word completely original(tm) do not steal(tm) and copywrite protectable(tm).

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I always thought it was pronounced "Ayylf". You kind of sound like a southerner pronouncing it that way, though.

Not a super scientific source but: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86

In America it is a hard A, but in the UK it is silent.

Pronounced exactly the same as elf. British English phonics has a silent a when followed by e in most cases, such as daemons being pronounced demons.

We've been pronouncing it as ale-f but I would guess it is meant to just be pronounced as elf.

And the fact that it doesn't help them in that department is what makes the change so lame and pathetic...

But yeah, its just elf. Or it could be like the word eel (eelf) seeing that the ae in daemons makes the same sound. Or it could be a hard A. Or just alf.

Come to think of it, any of these options highlight the silliness/stupidity of the change and so amuse me.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Aelf is an Old English word meaning elf. It is pronounced elf. GW have not been any more creative than usual in inventing this trademarked name for a fantasy army.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I'm naturally inclined to say Ale-f too. Not sure if it's right.

Is it Aelfs or Aelves? Aelfish or Aelven? In WHFB it was always Elfish and Elfs IIRC, so I guess the equivalent for new words.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I would pronounce it 'Elf'.

Sort of like how 'Astra Militarum' is pronounced 'Imperial Guard'...

You're mixing up Elves and Dwarfs...

Ah, my mistake. And I can see from the Wood Elves compendium it is "Aelves" and "Aelven".

There is not this idea.

It's spelled "Aelf", but it's pronounced "Throatwarbler Mangrove".

Pretty much. If the next armies batch of models is a complete flop to me I guess itll be time to seriously start looking elsewhere.

Im very indifferent toward the bloodblound stuff.

Chaos in general has never really been my thing so Im not holding my opinions of those models against GW.

I will however comment that so far they are 2/2 with making some very bulky looking miniatures. Curious to see if an aelf is just an elf whos been hitting the gym based on the current trend.
