Hey guys!

My name's Ben Counter and I'm a freelance writer. I've written a bunch of novels for Games Workshop including the Soul Drinkers and Grey Knights series.

I have a new project that I thought might be of interest to Warhammer fans. It's a dark fantasy novel that I'm writing via Patreon. Patreon is a crowdfunding site to support creative types like writers, artists and musicians. Patrons sign up for a small monthly subscription which help a creator focus on their project, which in my case is the novel entitled Ivory Crown. I'll still write for GW when the opportunities arise but Patreon should help me focus on writing Ivory Crown as well as paying work for GW.

The campaign can be found at patreon.com/BenCounter. Patrons can get not only the book when it's done, but access to short stories and worldbuilding material written exclusively for them. The first updates are about to go up, so check it out - even if you don't want to sign up yourself it helps a lot to spread the word. If you're a fan of what I write and want more of it, becoming a patron is the best way to get more writing out of me on a regular basis.

Many thanks all,

Ben Counter

Please explain a little more how Patreon works.

It seems like you are asking for us to subscribe by paying a certain amount per month. Does that count toward the eventual book?

I'll be honest here: I would love to read your book in paperback, but I am not willing to sign up to a new monthly bill indefinitely to read your book. Have you talked to some of your BL associates? Gav Thorpe got a whole trilogy published, and a lot of the other guys have published independent works. Do BL authors still have connections to Angry Robot or some other Solaris-related little publishing houses?

To a degree that is how Patreon itself does work. Patreon creators can set Pledges based on either a 'Monthly' subscription or 'Creation' subscription. Some subscriptions for artists could be bi-monthly, but they are creating multiple pieces you get access too. On creators who do it based on 'Creation' you can set a monthly cap that it won't go over.

For example one artist might charge pledges per piece of art he creates. To make sure you don't get charged a large amount, you could set a cap of like $2 and it wouldn't go over that.

I took at look at this particular one, in this particular one it is based on monthly pledges from $1, $2, $3, $5, $10 with each higher tier having more rewards. In the case of the lowest pledges it looks like you would get access to the completed EBook, while the higher pledge of $5/month would reward someone with a hard copy of the finished book.

Unlike Kickstarter where people pledge in one lump sum, then get rewards after they are created. Patreaon is more of a gradual buildup as your funds unlock new goals, has a bit more control, and you have access as things progress. This is mostly a medium used for writers, artists, podcasters, etc.

For creators:
Patreon is a way to get paid for creating the things you’re already creating (webcomics, videos, songs, whatevs). Fans pledge a few bucks per month OR per thing you release, and then you get paid every month, or every time you release something new (whether it’s on SoundCloud, YouTube, your own website, or anywhere).

For patrons:
Patreon is a way to pay your favorite creators for making the stuff you love. Instead of literally throwing money at your screen (trust us, that doesn’t work), you can now pledge a few bucks per thing that a creator makes. For example, if you pledge $2 per video, and the creator releases 3 videos in February, then your card gets charged a total of $6 that month. This means the creator gets paid regularly (every time she releases something new), and you become a bonafide, real-life patron of the arts. That’s right. Imagine you, in a long frilly white wig, painted on a 10-foot canvas on the wall of a Victorian mansion. And imagine your favorite creators making a living doing what they do best… because of you.

And for all you artsy people that would rather just watch a video...

I really liked the Soul Drinker novels. I haven't got a chance to read anything else by you but I am very interested. Quick question...with Patreon can I send you like $60.00 for a year of backing ($5.00 pledge per month) or do I need to send you $5.00 each month. I can't check patreon's website for this information because it is blocked at my workplace.

The world building information sounds really cool. I would love to see how you do your world building info. I have struggled a few times trying to figure out how to do it myself.

With Patreaon you would have to set it up to automatically come out each month. I haven't seen an option for a Year and I don't think they want that as it kind of is opposite of what Patreon is meant to be.
