So we've all heard theres no new codex, just updated rules and a camapign supplement you can use.. But in the english version of that WD page about the tau codex theres a few interesting things.
First, in the bottom side note it says the campaign book has updated datasheets for all units. Also if you look at the picture of the Devilfish at the bottom theres a secondary line of stats, what looks to be a non vehicle statline, completely different than the current codexes Devilfish datasheet. This shows that they didnt just add a few new units and formations and called it good. they actually changed the way the units function/cost and not so much of them changing our rules/support/signature systems. 9 new formations and a Tau specific Detatchment! Inc Tau Decurion
(Also heres me predicting the Fire Team rules function similar to the 6 race specific psychic powers(similar to the tyranid/BA/harly cards) you get from your factions tactical objective cards. Maybe we spend Markerlight tokens to do special fire team abilities?)

Take a look for yourself. I don't think the sky is falling just yet for the Tau.

"A shelf-busting 128 pages long"

Oh my god so many pages how can my book shelf even take it?!

On topic it seems like a really rough deal for Tau just to get new units added. At least the 7th ed Guard Codex had some rules tweaks even it was just the 5th ed book with some new crap added.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

User Review: Well, I bought this book, and while it was a very nice addition to my collection, I unfortunately made the mistake of storing it on the top shelf of my bookcase. When I placed it there at first I could hear a soft creaking sound, and thinking it was only the floorboards under my feet I left it at that. However, as soon as I turned my back to walk away from my bookshelf the entire thing collapsed, starting with where I had placed the codex. This wasn't the end of it though, as the force of gravity continued to pull this marvelous codex downwards, until it impacted the floor, leaving a hole in the floor of my apartment, and falling straight into my downstairs neighbor's apartment, where it landed on their pet Iguana.

All of this has resulted in me being evicted by my landlord, and having a lawsuit filed against me, by my neighbor, but I am willing to take such burdens for such an amazing item as this codex. After all, when I contacted the GW headquarters, they informed me that I shouldn't have taken the warning of the codex being "shelf-busting" as a joke, and I'm well aware now that it was simply my dismissal of their very valid cautions, that I'm in this situation now. Have no fear though, this codex has an additional function as serving as an umbrella against the harsh rain that would otherwise fall upon my head while I type this review.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

One can only hope this philosophy is the way forward. I wouldn't mind Blood Angels getting a similar treatment (updated rules, data slates, formations, etc.).

Back on topic, isn't this exactly what GW did with the nids when you look at all those formations, dataslates and the leviathan book? The only difference is they're going to release the new Tau codex which will contain all those previous formations WITH THE OPTION of collecting the rules in a few different books or white dwarfs.

I don't know how I feel about this but still, an update is an update and if they're not changing how some units function too much then I suppose that means maybe they were happy with how they functioned in regards to 7th editon. I just hope to the AUN that they fix the flyers.

No, it means that if you already have the 6E codex and don't want to buy a new one, you can get the campaign book and have all the new rules. OR you could just get the new codex.

Wait, theres no codex? when did this happen? I thought the drop date was confirmed as next weekend

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

There is a codex but the white dwarf basicly sais: It's the old codex + the new unit that were released. No further changes.

Don't know where you guys got your info from but the WD says there are 9 formations plus all the new stuff and a Hunter Cadre "decuron". This is info from ATT.

That's not at all what it says. It says that the campaign thing will contain all the rules for the new units and all the changes made to old units, so that you can use it and the old codex, or you can buy the new codex which contains all of that.

In fact we know of at least two changes to old units, such as FWs being reduced to ten man squads maximum, but starting at five minimum like the Breachers. We also know that the Piranha have been increased to BS 4.

Oh, and all the formations and stuff D:

They are using the existing codex & just adding the info for all the new stuff.

Or

GW also gives you the choice of using your existing codex (since the new is a reprint of the old + the campaign book), and buying the campaign book that has all the new stuff in it.

6 in one, half a dozen in the other.

Well, it would be fine if they nerfed their blatant balance mistakes first and brought everyone to the same level. Then you'd only have to buy the new update if you wanted to use the new models. But, unfortunately, GW is GW and this will never happen.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

In the case of Blood Angels, it would come in the form of giving them all of the updates that occurred with the Codex: Space Marines (this would be the updated rules part) and giving them their own variation of the Gladius Strike Force.

The thing is, "Slap in a Formation and it'll all be just fine" shouldn't be the way to assure internal balancing.

I am with Peregrine on this one - it's a lovely idea IF they decide to balance everything BEFORE applying this new... "variant"

As for the whole "you can buy the Warzone book instead of the Codex!" deal - yeah... no way. I can understand if you REALLY want that Warzone book, but if ya don't want it? Why spend almost double the money for half the info when the new codex is cheaper and has it all compiled in a SHELF BUSTING DREADNOUGHT OF A BOOK!

It is not in GWs interest to balance things ever. They want codex creep. they want one army to be the biggest and greatest thing until the next one. It keeps people buying ever increasingly expensive models. GW loves band wagon gamers.

If you want balance play 30k or play Bolt Action without flame tanks. You will never see it in 40k.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs

This isn't the first time they did this. Tyranids got the same treatment with Leviathan and it fixed nothing. It was not an improvement over a new codex. A handful of units, and some of them are actually used quite well in modern lists, but it didn't fix any of the internal balance issues the codex had. The codex was still bad. It was just bad with extra units. The Tyrannocyte wasn't game changing. The Neurothrope isn't game changing. Mucoloids just let us spam more and spam better. I hadn't even thought they repeat that dookie idea again...

Doing it with Blood Angels though, I could live with that. It does just need a healthy FAQ to get good. But that's the exception, and I don't want it to become the rule.
