Holy feth!

At a loss of words right now, because it was so one sided and sudden, but somewhat elated that Ronda's star will diminish and she won't be on every station/magazine etc. It was always common knowledge in some circles that Ronda had a subpar striking coach, but that was overshadowed by her judo experience, but against a purebred striker, she looked pretty amateurish.

Holly Holm is the new women's bantamweight champ. Holy gak.

They said Holly Holm didn't deserve a title shot at Ronda Rousey. They said she didn't even belong in the cage. They said Rousey was unbeatable.

And yet, much like Mike Tyson met his comeuppance at the hands of Buster Douglas in a stadium halfway around the world a generation ago, Holm, the former world boxing champion, put in a flawless performance against the biggest star in mixed martial arts in front of a potential record crowd in Melbourne, Australia.

Holm (10-0) absolutely dominated the previously invincible Rousey in the main event of UFC 193 on Saturday night before finishing her with a brutal head kick knockout at the 59-second mark of the second round to claim the UFC bantamweight title.

"I've never spent this much time in the gym than I have for any fight," said Holm, a 34-year-old JacksonWink MMA fighter. "It really all came together."

Rousey (12-1) came out and pushed an aggressive pace from the outset, but it turned out not to be a smart tactic against a fighter who had 38 pro boxing fights under her belt before ever turning to MMA. Holm figured out Rousey's timing, used front kicks to keep her from moving in, and repeatedly tagged the stationary Rousey as she stood in front of Holm.

By the later moments of the opening round, Rousey was bloodied, tiring, and sloppy. It got worse in the second round, as Holm continued to pick Rousey apart. A picture perfect head-kick dropped Rousey cold. Holm landed a right hand to the grounded Rousey before referee Herb Dean waved off the bout at 0:59.

The finish was a stunning conclusion to a tumultuous several-week period in which dissension swirled around the Rousey camp. First, Rousey's mother, Dr. Ann Maria DeMars, openly blasted Rousey's head coach, Edmund Tarverdyan. Then Tarvedyan's financial woes and bankruptcy case came to light. Then Rousey hung up on a media call when asked about her relationship with UFC fighter Travis Browne, who was accused of domestic abuse by his previous girlfriend (He has not been charged for the alleged actions).

Finally, at Friday's weigh-ins, Rousey came unglued during a the traditional posedown while Holm kept her cool, a foreshadowing of things to come.

Good.

I actually quite like Ronda, but it's bad for the "sport" to have such little actual competition. Having someone who can give Ronda a run for her money is a good thing.

A rivalry is certainly better than a single person who's way out of everybody else's league. The question is, how quickly will Ronda learn from this?

Ronda has no respect for the sport, just her ambitions. Maybe she'll train next time instead of making commercials, movies, and the talk show circuit.

This was a good thing, having practiced martial arts for the better part of 20 years my personal pet peeve watching MMA is the lack of proper striking. Yes ground fighting is very effective but if you properly control the ring and your opponent it should never hit the floor to begin with.

It annoys the piss out of me when Dana quotes UFC as being inspired by Bruce Lee, Bruce's teaching were that you use whatever tools you have at your disposal and to exclude nothing due to style or tradition. If you watch footage of Bruce's fights he concentrates on the fastest possible elimination of the opponent and that centers on lightning striking, ground fighting is the last resort of a prolonged fight and shouldn't be the go to choice like it is in MMA/UFC.

I like Rhonda and she's had a great track record but it's about time somebody came in to unseat her especially while striking. The matches of late have been incredibly dull and one sided, this will hopefully open things back up a bit.

So glad this happened.
I don't even watch mma but I was starting to get incredibly annoyed at seeing her on my computer daily, with EVERYONE kissing her ass.

People did say that she couldn't box.

I don't really care all that much, I'm not a UFC fan. But it must be bad for a sport for one person to dominate as much as she did.

Does this mean the she will finally get off my feed and stop talking about Kim Kardashian and how she could beat her up?
It seems annoying how people keep saying she is like, the best women ever, and I hope this ends.

So she is Rocky from Rocky III and Holm is Clubber Lang, only with more schadenfreude tossed in.

No.

In fact you'll probably see more leading up to the inevitable rematch.

Just block the posts if you don't want to see them.

I enjoyed watching the Internet at work when that kick connected.

It's good she was beaten. Kinda like FC Bayern in the Bundesliga. Kinda dull when one person/team is winning all the time.

The concept of watching women MMA is offensive.Where's the hair pulling and the pillowfight?

As a very casual MMA fan, I was on the Rousey hype train (good-lookin' woman who can kick some ass and says some stuff that offends people whose politics I don't like) until I found out that she's a Sandy Hook truther.

I'm delighted she got her ass kicked.

Boxing is a mess, but I'd still much rather watch it than MMA for the reasons you state. At least boxers are trying to land significant blows.

Indeed. Thats why I can't stand MMA. They always end up doing something that should require a 70s boom chicka chow background song.

I'm old enough to have watched the old ""tough man competitions" that MMA evolved from. It's far more refined now, and I don't want to sell that TOO short. But at its most basic level it still resembles my first impression from all those years ago -- some token punches and kicks, then a lot of rolling around on the mat.

I dunno...I'd rather watch actual boxing, or kickboxing, or wrestling. Not a hybrid with athletes that doesn't seem to do any of the above particularly well. *shrug* I'm sure that'll get me labeled a hater, but it's just my opinion on the matter.

I agree, kickboxing for me is still the most interesting one to watch, followed by boxing. All the locks and grapples in the world won't entertain me.

I know about the Sandy Hook tragedy (live about an hour from there now)...but what's a SH truther? I don't think I follow. Is it a 'blame the victim' kinda thing? Cuz I can't fathom anyone saying an elementary kid was "asking for it".

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

It was all a government plot to create a tragedy as an excuse to take away our guns. Yes, it's that stupid and offensive.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Maybe next time when the ref tells Ronda to touch gloves with her opponent before the fight she'll show some respect and do it.
That way she won't look a complete tit when she's lying bloodied on the floor.

It's not hard to understand why some people would believe such things. Remember, to a politician, every tragedy is really a political opportunity.

Anyway, back to her loss, it's certainly not always a good thing for a sport to be dominated so much by a single person. On the other hand, you still need a star to bring in new fans. For example, Danica Patrick isn't the best racer ever, but she did help bring in a lot of new racing fans.

I agree about the one person winning potentially hurting the sport. And it's funny you should mention NASCAR, I got turned off of that sport when Jimmie Johnson won like five championships in a row. I know I was not alone. I also think Jimmie and/or his team is cheating in some way and just haven't gotten caught yet (except on minor infractions). But that is a discussion for another thread.

Dana White = Don King (promoter). Ronda = cash cow (fraud). She's a bad sport, arrogant bully, with no class. She's gonna hold her breath until Dana gives her belt back. When is the last time Dana "sought out" the best plastic surgeon for one of his fighters? I've seen dudes ears hanging off there heads in the UFC after a fight. They got there check in the mail like anybody else. Don King err White knows he needs to re-groom his prized heffer.
