Hi guys, it's been a while since I played in a tournament so I'm just wondering if people use fortifications much in tournaments? And if so which ones and how are they used?

Semi related but slightly off tangent,
Why don't I see people playing Bunkers more often?
I'll see the odd Bastion make an appearance every now and then, but Bunker usage seems pretty rare. Is there a reason for this? I would have thought a somewhat cheap AV14 structure to keep your important shooters in so they don't die so easily would have been a good thing?

Because typically you want mobility.
I use a bunker as a slingshot for my grav cents, since I don't want to use Draigo/GKs anymore. It can score objectives, which is nice, but it's primarily there to be a slingshot.

I think either VSG or Skyshield Landing Pad.
I have seen someone take a Eldar Revanent Titan upon Skyshield landing pad, thus for every Lascannon hits on the Titan, avaeragely only one could hope to do some damage to that 9 hps,

I sometimes use the bunker to protect my Dark Reapers. Makes them more of a threat and helps funnel the enemy towards the bunker as they know they just can't ignore the thing. Range is too long and firepower too harsh.

This. A Bastion with an escape hatch doesn't break the bank, but still allows you to effectively start 12" closer to the enemy.

I loved playing against fortifications, especially ones where people put effort into converting them! I played against an eldar aegis defence line that was possibly the best sculpted piece of scenery I've ever seen

I know during the tail end of my last efforts at competitive play I had tremendous luck using the super Plasma Cannon fortification with a War Convocation. Eliminating its "Gets Hot" made it really nice, and gave some functionality to my Convocation Tax" Rangers who otherwise contributed little.

I see Void Shield Generators a lot in competitive play, not much else though. Not to say that it doesn't happen, just that it's not something I've particularly seen.

I play orks, and never leave without a ADL for my Lootaz to go to ground behind, and grab a 2+ Cover. Gretchin can't be seen behind them either, and give the lootaz a lil bubble wrap from units popping up.behind them. And if points allow, I add extra Barricade sections for even more Loota coverage.

I've only played two small tourneys, but what I saw there was ADLs, and one guy had a geared up fortress of redemption with all the fixin's and an artillery heavy IG list. Dropping orbitals from up top it was actually pretty legit.

I've seen a single Void Shield Generator in a recent two day tourney I played in. Events that I've attended, fortifications have been on a significant decline. I remember one year playing 6th edition, nearly every army utilized an Aegis Defense Line or Bastion.

The bunker with an ammo dump would be ideal for plasma vets for AM, or any other plasma heavy squad.
Would a void shield upgrade be worth it for extra durability? Automatically Appended Next Post: How about any servitor squad with plasma cannons sitting in there quite cheap and durable and reliable for what you get

I like the Skyshield Landing Pad, as it grants a 4+ invulnerable save to models on top of it, and for +5 points you can start a flyer on the board turn 1 that benefits from the save because it starts on the pad. Pretty excellent, especially if you only have one flyer and want it to get the most use out of it every game. That's my personal favorite. Take it easy for now. -Red__Thirst-

Has anyone used and had any luck with fortification networks?
Specifically Wall of Martyrs, it would be interesting to see maybe Imperial Guard manning a trench network with lots of bunkers across their deployment zone and Vengeance Weapon Batterys

At first glance I thought those were clearing barrels in front of the bunker, hahahaha.
I either use the ADL with a quad gun, or the SkyShield, to bring my Vendetta in on turn 1, and my unit is similar to combat engineers, so it would be fluffy for them to bring a fortification with the army list.

I played in a team tourney yesterday and I actually faced two fortifications.
Game 1 had a Skyshield Landing Pad and an Eldar Lynx, 2 Dreadknights and a Wraithknight sitting on it turn 1.
Game 3 had a Void Shield Generator with IG/SM boasting a super heavy tank.
The Skyshield was pretty clutch, especially on turn 1 It is one of the few fortifications which can't be destroyed, which is a definite plus when choosing a fortification.

the problem is the cost, the fortress of redemption for exampler is expensive as all hell, the tidewall is too, dont get me started on the vengeance battery or the wall of martyrs. the fact is that the high end fortifications are too expensive and too bulky to see play, the meta could use with them really it could but for those points you could do so much more good elsewhere, and with maelstrom becoming popular your going to be stationary while there playing for objective? i dont think so.
the smaller ones minus the ADL really as the ADL can and will always be the gold standard we hold other fortifications too for value and practicality is that they serve no objective improvement over the ADL. a bastion might protect people inside, a bunker might have a better mounted gun, promtheium pipes might offer you torrent but they all beg to ask why you didnt just take the ADL and work with good enough?
the exception here is really the void shield and the skyshield, the skyshield sees play in circles where anti-air isnt such an issue. in my local store planes are such a bloody oddity unless there spammed in which case one skyshield isnt enough to cover your bases, and so your either not going to have it be used on everyone, or your going to get shot down the second you take off and well the void shield is the frigging void shield, theres a reason we gawk at models with void shields there bloody invincible somedays and lol at our feeble attempts to hurt them
what fortifications need is for standard game modes to come back and for them to do something meta shifting, i mean really shifting not just trying to find a niche to sit in and be a silent observer like the tidewall. you want fortifications in the meta, what i would probably do is give fortifications larger then the ADL (and not the tidewall) the ability to take free terrain traps, things to slow down the enemy and hamper there mobility right back, give there weapons all pinning as well as weapons fired from them, let the fortification allow you to place traps all around your half of the table like tank traps and IED's. i thought of the idea of a grav plate strip as a cool idea, a plate set that if a hover vehicle, speeder, or bike/jetbike passed over it they were immediately immoblized for one full turn and cannot turbo or shock or ram/charge. this would really throw some gears into armies like bike spam and jetbike spam who rely on speed and aggression to carry the day and being forced to stop and stand still is a quick way to wind up dead, and since your immobilized no jink saves for you only relevant cover saves.
that would shift the meta, having your falcons and black knights and land speeders and attack bikes stop around the midline every game really slows your gameplan up, it buys the enemy time to sort through your forces and pick off targets a little slower. and being able to deny late game captures by a tau hammerhead yoloing across the table might win you games.
