Okay so I love terrain, I love "active" and engaging boards and I think they add a lot to the experience. Anymore I rarely play on anything smaller than an 5x8 table for the added space for things. And often we will include fortifications (at no point cost) into the table setup before side and deployment setups.

But I'm curious, how many people out there actually take advantage of fortifications in 30k? And I don't mean things like the ADL. Actual fortifications, Castellum Strongholds, Bastions, that big primus redoubt or Aquila Macro Canon.

I make use of a void shield generator to park my artillery any heavy support squads under. Definitely helps them weather counter-fire and it's pretty cheap on points.

I've taken to using an Imperial Bunker. Nice place to hide a unit.

One obstacle is that quite a few rites of war don't allow them.

Quite true. Then again, many that don't allow them wouldn't benefit much or fit the fluff of the rite.

I love to pair them with the reaping. It's awesome.

I think the question is whether we play with ("free") fortifications scattered on the board, not whether we include them in our force.

Our group uses some fortifications, if possible mirrored as closely as possible for both sides (so if there's a bunker 1/3 of the way from the table edge on one side, there should be something comparable 1/3 of the way on the other side too) or smack in the middle.

We usually don't use any further rules for fortifications (so no functioning weapons, etc.), because that's harder to balance, it seems.

I was mostly just curious how people play with them Do you scatter them about free, or do you see people build them into lists

I've had them on the board as derelicts before. The more terrain the better.

well, once you discount that most RoWs don't let you take fortifications: Locally the few players who bring fortifications are: the 2 IF players, me (DG and Auxillia specficially) and the IW player.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.
