Hi guys, I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the top ten strongest formations FOR THEIR POINTS COST. Can be anything from GW released before now. Here are mine:

1. Space marine gladius - hard to argue with up to 12 free razorbacks
2. Admech War Convocation - again, stupid amounts of free everything
3. Space Marine Skyhammer Annihilation force - so many free buffs...
4. Tau Piranha Wing - endless unkillable drone and seeker farm
5. Cannoptek harvest - easy way to tie up opponent's death star for a tiny investment. Plus 2 harassment units in the scarabs and spyder.
6. Necron Decurion - Necrons, but now with 4++...
7. Riptide wing - just a way to make spamming riptides more desirable. Removes the nova downsides and doubles up on shooting for a turn.
8. The new necron starter bundle formation with endless warriors + scarabs. Unsure of the name, but this is horrible. Necrons are hard enough to kill already without respawning!
9. Eldar CAD / battlehost - both allow with windriders and wraithknights to be spammed efficiently
10. Tau Hunter Contingent - Commander gives his ignores cover and twin linked to potentially every unit in his army!

What do you think? Have I missed anything obvious. Fee free to re-rank them in your own order

Probably the optimised stealth cadre should have been in there somewhere

Edit to correct some names!

I think you mean Decurion, not Reclamation. The Legion let's that detachment reroll ones for RP.

Bullyboyz for me over the Warhodt, since CAD works better for Eldar.

Uhhhh yeah. That's about all of them. I'd argue destroyer cult belongs on there more than the eldar one, since most eldar players just bring CAD's so that the bikes will be obsec, so that formation has kind of a large opportunity cost.

I had heard of that one! Not so familiar with forge world stuff though. The bonus does seem a bit ridiculous.

Yeah, maybe eldar CAD should trump windrider host - I mainly went for that one as it allows multiple wraithknights in one detachment...

Bullyboyz and destroyer cult are both pretty strong too

I'd say that the Ravenwing Support Squadron is a contender too. Not necessarily by itself but it can be an amazing force multiplier to an already strong RW army.

Also, where's Skyhammer?

I changed a few names for accuracy!

I agree the support squadron is pretty decent - that overwatch is very nice!

The skyhammer is on there

To be fair, most of these could be fairly tame if they were run in their weakest possible version but I'm assuming that they're being run competititvely!

I added a poll cos why not? If everyone picks their top five we should see who comes out truly on top!

If there are any more good contenders for the top ten, let me know...

I've added that as an option on the poll now

Seems like the librarius conclave was an important omission, a fair few have gone for it. Any other suggestions? It's interesting to see people's opinions on these, some of the ones I'd rate stronger are further down. I guess you don't see formations like the Firestream Wing or Retribution Phalanx played much (yet anyway...)

So, as voted by everyone the top ten is this:

1) Necron Decurion
2) Eldar CAD / Battlehost
3) Space Marine Gladius
4) Skyhammer Annihilation force
5) Admech War Convocation
6) Tau Riptide Wing
7) Tau optimised stealth cadre
8) Tau Hunter Cadre
9) Necron Cannoptek harvest
10) Space Marine Librarius conclave

Seems the original 'decurion' still reigns supreme!

It's a strong detachment but hardly anything gamebreaking. The Command Benefits are poorly worded and while boosting that counts as jinking and doesn't cause you to fire snapshots is certainly nice it's not enough to even come close to say, Decurion for example. If you could do the boost/jink/no snapshots thing every turn... well, that'd be a different story. The thing is, you can take bikes easily in a CAD too and that way you can actually use flyers if you so choose or pick some viable AA for example. A Sicaran and some ObSec Scouts to camp your objectives are a nice and relatively cheap addition to your bike army.
