Right! I've gotta blog my reborn journey into the world of 40k!

I've not painted/played in over 20 years and the reason I've started again is due to a box of 5 metal unpainted space marine scouts that have just always been close to my computer desk... waiting for their day to no longer be metal an shiney.

Spoiler:

So of course in preparation to paint these 5 space marines I go and buy 70 other space marines with various vehicles...

1x Land speeder storm
1x Razorback
1X Rhino
1x 5man command squad
1x 5man combat squad
1x5man Assault suqad
1x5man terminator squad (ordered)
2x10man tactical squad
1x10man scout squad ( bolt pistol and swords) / metal*
2X5man scout squad (bolters/shotgun/heavy)
2x Telions ( I thought he looked epic and wanted to paint 1 black templars and the other ultramarine for a showcase stand ) / metal*
1x Emperors champion / metal*
1xBlack Templars upgrade kit ( I really don't believe that box is worth 20quid!!)

And I bought 2x 3man space marine starter/paint kits to start on.

I started construction of my army on the 21/02/2016, I painted all 3 space-marine starter models with the starter brush;

Since then I have gone and purchased more GW paint and some fine detail brushes, I've started experimenting on the 4thSpace Marine. I've gone back and touched up the previous marines with the detail brush, but i'm also leaving them as they are to look back on (hopefully to see how i've progressed )

So this is where I am currently. I'm still testing the kind of style I'll go for. Will be it be dark black templars with very fine highlights or chuck it on and add some brighter highlights like the space marine above. ( that only had a black prime coat, the previous had a couple base coats )

Also before i even touch those 5 special space marine scouts, I really want to find my perfect paint. I'll be testing a few brands throughout the week on my tester models.

Regarding the game:

I've purchased the 6th edition codex and the old black templars codex, just to read through and understand the game more (all i remember as a kid was rolling dice and orks droppin )

I understand Black Templars are more of a close combat faction.. or are they referred to as a chapter? So they like to get up in the opposing teams face with power weapons, also if one of their comrades drops they get extra bonuses to charge/engage? .. I have lots of questions!

I'd like build my army 90% close combat but also I'd like to have a 5 team sniper group lead by Sgt. Telion, now i;m not sure but i've not seen many pictures of a black templars with a sniper/telion group, is it allowed?

I've heard you can split black templars into 5man squads and have 1 heavy & 1 special weapon in the squad, would the rest of the group run with bolters? or would you give them close combat weapons? Or better yet, have 10man crusade close combat team in front and the 5man heavey/special/bolters behind?

As you can tell i'm very new and have much to learn!

Sure, but it's an excellent start. Your painting skills are excellent, so all you really need to do is build and play. Looking forward to seeing more.

Dude that means alot thank you very much!

I've just finished priming this land speeder storm. Going to have fun painting this whilst i decide on the style for the marines. I'm just gonna focus on LOTS of detail for the speeder.

Anyone know the rules with the speeder? If i place the sitting figures inside the model, does that mean i wont be able to use the speeder for transporting scouts whilst in a game? OR are the sitting figures purely there for decoration?

The scouts are there for decoration. Paint job does look really good.

Yeah, what Spacewolverine said. They're just there for show.

Ah thats great news about the scouts! Can have some fun painting those inside the speeder. I just thought it be a tad bit confusing on the battlefield.

So update: I'm still heavily experimenting on how I'll paint the army.

Option 1:
Black Prime
Black base coats (3 very thin layers)
3 dark grey highlights

Option 2:
Black Prime
NO base coat
1 dark highlight
1 bright dark light

Option 3:
Black Prime
Base coat
3 Dark highlights / messy highlights, covering more armour with greys

Out of all the options, 2 things still need alot of work and further testing. The white on the shoulder pads and the bolt gun metal.

The pads: I've given up on ceramite white, its lumpy and leaves a horrible texture. Base coating with a few layers of greys then using skullwhite seems to be the best option.. BUT 2 pads would take awhile to paint.. i've got 70 marines to get through. Going to try priming the pads with white and just doing the trims with black (i'm hoping this will be the answer )

Boltgun: I dont know what im doing wrong.. I may just need paint thinner as using water makes it spread too much and looks gloopy.

Option 3 looks the best in my opinion. I love me some templars, so I will be keeping an eye out for this.

Option 3 looks the best IMHO.

White has always been a rough color to get smooth.

Personally I left the guys off the storm, just keeping the pilot/gunner. With a little modification, they are going to join the ranks on the ground.

Its a toughie! I like the darker look of 3, not so clean shaven .. but also from a distance option 2 pops out more... but 3 has that edge about him!

I'm getting 20 Vallejo game paints on Saturday, so gonna bash up 2 models using option 1 and 2 with those paints and see out of all models which to go for. May have to leave it for a vote as if i don't decide I'll never have a completed army!

Yeah I might paint them all up, but not glue them in and try and decide. I'm still not 100% on the game rules, would i be able to use 1 storm to transport 2 different 5men neophyte squads around the board?

Storms can only hold 5 guys at a time. Now there is nothing stopping you from shuttling one squad downrange, and then going back for another lot. But it probably wouldn't hurt to just get another speeder. They aren't a lot of points.

Hobby tome and budget is another issue though...

Transports can only carry 1 unit at a time. You can't embark another unit onto a transport if one is already inside even if the transport capacity says they would technically fit. As far as painting is concerned, I like option 3 as the other options strike me as two contrasty. They're a bit unsubtle. However it's your army and if you prefer another option then I say ignore all our input and go with what you want to do. You're the one painting all these models after all. As for white, you're either going to have to undercoat with grey or tan before applying the white unless you keep the pads separate and prime them white and paint them before gluing them on.

Also, I find metallic colors tend to go on goopy but shrink as it dries. I usually drybrush boltgun and then repaint the black over my sloppiness.

I would have to say option 3 as well. Nice looking models in any case by the way

I like both 2 & 3, but i think option 3 just edges into the lead.

Boom! So I purchased loads of Vallejo paints.. some the wrong ones, some I'll never even use. Though I got my important blacks and greys! I think this is the.. 6th test marine! I am much happier with this results, the vallejo black is amazeballs, I'm loving the eyedrop pots, my pallete is not full of wasted paint.. and the lid doesn't just flip close

Tried a few new things with option 4 marine. I sprayed the one shoulder pad white.. I wont go back to painting white pads again! Spraying pads white gives me the end result i want.

Also tried Vallejo ' Heavy Charcoal (155) ' (GW - Stormvermin Fur / Charadon Granite* ) on the bolter gun.. i really dig it! Its a tad lumpy in the picture, as i unlikely thinned it and i believe its gone over some Eshin grey.

Blue eyes!.. or red eyes..BLUE! Hmm.. this will be a toughie too.

I may just try experimenting with the shoulder pads a tad more, i've seen some sweet 'dirtier' looks with shading in the ridges. Going to figure out how to achieve this and then give it ago.

My next project is to paint a neophyte; Give painting faces and their cloth trousers ago. THEN start on my actual Black Templars army!

Update to blog:

This almighty box arrived today, full of approx 45 black templars upgrade spurs. No adding transfers for any of the marines.. shall all have shoulder pads and lots of extras.

Bought a Drop pod as i'm pretty sure i'll need one. Gone for a white interior and the outside supports will have some white panels ( currently erected with blue tack )

That.... is a lot of BT upgrade sprues. Nice work on the Drop Pod as well, I always hated building those things.
