Playing Night Lords and Destroyers fit perfectly into the theme and lore of the army.

However...they are crazy expensive for what they do.

has anyone seen positive results from this unit?

Hard to justify the cost.

Thanks

good thing that 30k is not a game about min-maxing points and more about fluff, amiright?

sarcasm aside, I love them. phosphex grenades mulch terminators, the rad missiles demolish marines (and can really screw over primarchs, if you're lucky) pair both of those with the mobility of a jump pack and you have a fun, decent unit. Beyond that, again, putting a moritat in there just makes it silly. Not only can you mulch and permanently hinder a few different kinds of squads, now you can have a gatling volkite sitting inside of the same squad!

In a word, no.

BUT!!! They are a really fluffy and cool unit, max squad with upgrades is far too many points, especially with jump packs, but as above said, with phosphex and rad missiles they are fun on a bun!

Yep I agree on the anti-min-maxing with 30k

This army is more about the fluff.

if you want some straight up silly stuff, I still wanna try this out with my death guard:

1 Praetor (rad grenade, the reaping RoW)
1 Typhon/typhus (for the poison bombardment)
1 siege breaker, w/ 3 phosphex

2 tactical squads (probably 15 or 20 men strong)
10-man heavy flamer heavy support squad

3 5-10 man destroyer squads, w/ jump packs, ML, 3 phosphex

2 10-man grave warden squads (for more poison!)
3 legion medusas (w/ phosphex shells)

Mortarion (who has infinite 12' phosphex bombs)

I have no idea how much this list would cost, but I like the Idea of 15 phosphex templates the first 3 turns, then 4 every other turn

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

It's a good question that gets asked a bit, and I haven't seen a compelling answer yet.

As a WE player, I eyed them up in an assault support (i.e. rad grenade) role...with jump packs, skipping on the missiles and even the phosphex, and generally keeping them as cheap as possible. And the price still gets kinda nuts. But maybe I'll playtest a unit one of these days.

For my purposes, changing them to A2 in the next red book would be a boost that'd make sense fluff-wise...they seem like veterans. Cheaper jump packs and a slight points cut to the base unit also seem obvious, but FW might just stand pat. *shrug*

But they're just a funny unit...capable of bringing some pain, but not THAT much pain considering the cost. Is that something you want to put in one of your prime transports to ensure that they get close, where they operate best? And if not, then they feel very vulnerable in a Rhino or with jump packs because of the attention they'll probably attract.

I'd be happier with them if you didn't have to pay the same amoung of points for jumppacks whether you brought 5 or 10. I have a squad assembled, but getting around to painting them has been a low priority due to their high points cost.

But who wouldn't want to shoot rad missiles, chuck rad grenades, and melt the ground with phosphex bombs, while the squad is blasting away with two pistols a piece?

I've been testing them myself with assault squad proxies since assembling mine has been low priority, but they have been insanely fun with a Moritat hanging out with them. But that's my personal experience with them thus far.
