Hello
Tried AoS with a friend another day.
Got question.
Rules state that unit cannot shoot if it had Run or Retreated during movement phase. no restriction on shooting if the unit started within 3" of the enemy and choose to remain stationary - can unit shoot in that circumstance?
Can it both shoot and then Pile in in combat phase & strike it's attacks?

Yes to all - one of my favourite parts of the game is the freedom with shooting.

The only restriction to shooting is line of sight. Feel free to shoot into whatever you happen to be in melee with or shoot out of combat to another unit if you can.
Or split your shots and do both if you feel like being bold...or play with lots of Flamers.

Yes you can, but several people have a problem with it, probably because you could never do it in the past. So if you want to be RAW then go for it but make sure you always talk it over with your opponent or ask if there is a house ruling of the subject.

I find that shooting in combat is totally fine and makes bringing ranged units worth it. What people don't seem to under stand is how fast AOS is. If there was no shooting in combat many ranged units would not shoot. I have dwarf irondrakes (very good unit) which have a 16 inch range, 20 after movement. My friend plays demons and his seekers, who can run 2D6 and charge, move like 30 inches a turn. There is no way I would take ranged units if I coudn't shoot in combat.

For the Fyreslayers it's a bit amusing. The magmadroth could potentially hurt someone shooting outside of combat but he does far more damage by simply bleeding on his opponents (and allies). Otherwise it's a comical flurry of annoying throwing axes like a rabid midget with a cache of nerf weapons. We both got a laugh out of them for all 3 games at the last event.

It's not unreasonable to assume that everyone is playing by the rules. You shouldn't have to confirm that people will allow shooting while within 3" of an enemy model because it's allowed in the core rules. INSTEAD, people should talk to you if they're looking to institute house rules.
