So I felt the need to paint yet another Space Marine force!

I wanted a Skyhammer force and bought two boxes of the new Devastators and two drop pods. And while assembling them I kind of groaned at the idea of painting yet more silver and black. I realised that since this is an autonomous formation it was actually the perfect chance to paint something new. Over the last year or so the idea of painting White Scars became very appealing. One because they are a stark contrast to my Silver Skulls and a much stronger challenge. Painting over white is not very forgiving at all. This would be a great test and learning experience. So, enough babbling. Here are the first pictures.

I am very pleased with myself with how well I managed the tribal markings on the sergeant so far.

Feedback wanted: I am thinking of using green or blue for purity seals, what do you think?

to be honest I'm not sure, maybe post a pic of one of each. if I had to choose I would make them blue just so they contrast with the red.
painting that well with white is very impressive btw

This is a cool formation. Very fluffy. Good luck with all that merciless white. I vote a dark blue purity seal.

Started line inking. I think it looks okay. Will need a little clean up but pleased with it.

The Grav squad needs a little more work than these guys. And due to a total accident I never primed the second sergeant so will probably do a painting tutorial with him. (Eventually)

Fantastic work. The ink lining is excellent. I really like all the red accents as well.

Clean white, fantastic black lining, excellent red tribal/clan markings.

Lovely crisp whites and reds you've got going there! The blue lenses are a great choice.

Are you going to be using ten man devs or 5 man squads?

White is such a pain in the ass, but when it's done right, man it looks good.

And suffice to say, you've done it right. And all the red details really pop too. I bet these are going to look great when they are finished, and are going to kick some serious ass on the table.

Thanks, yeah I figured red lenses would be too much red, and green would be out of place. The blue lenses will also tie in with the purity seals. Right now they will be finished as just 5 man squads but I plan to fill them out to 10 man squads in the future.

Thanks man. I can't take too much credit for the white. Having an airbrush really makes it easy. By the time I get around to the Assault Squads, I am going to try for more gradient in the white.

These look fantastic. I'm starting White Scars myself this summer, so I'm curious about technique. Is that Micron pen I see in one of the pics the secret to your clean armor lines? What size/color is it? Also, will you use the same lining on bikes and vehicles, or go up a size? Thanks!

That is a Micron pen 005. But I only use that on purity seals. I use line inking to line the armor. Secret Weapon Soft Body wash applied with a 0 size brush.
