A British actor-comedian has been chosen to play the title character in the pilot for the Amazon revival of The Tick TV series (see "A New Run at 'The Tick' Series”). Peter Serafinowicz, who played Denarian Garthan Saal in Guardians of the Galaxy and Pete in Shaun of the Dead, will play The Tick, according to Deadline.

Serafinowicz also has a raft of geek TV and film voice work, including Archer, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Axe Cop, and the voice of Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace.

Star of the original series Patrick Warburton is expected to exec produce the new version.

Amazon has ordered a pilot for a new live action series based on comic character The Tick, according to Deadline. There was talk of a new series back in 2014 with Patrick Warburton, who played the lead in the short-lived 2001 series, attached (see "Patrick Warburton in 'The Tick'"), but Warburton will not appear in this new version. But the DNA of the series is the same, as comic and TV series creator Ben Edlund will write and executive produce along with fellow original exec producer Barry Josephson and Warburton (at least for the pilot).

Cinematographer Wally Pfister (Moneyball, the Dark Knight trilogy) is in negotiations to direct.

Griffin Newman (Vinyl) has been cast as Arthur Everest, and Valorie Curry (Veronica Mars) will play Dot Everest. A lead has not yet been cast.

Only nine episodes were produced of the first go-round at a live action adaptation starring Warburton back in the early 2000s. It debuted to good reviews (see "'The Tick' Debuts to Critical Acclaim"), but was canceled after being put in a horrendous time slot against tough completion by Fox (see "Fox Dislodges 'The Tick'").

Three seasons of an animated series based on The Tick were produced in the 90s.

I'm quite happy with that casting TBH.

I'm not sure about their choice of actor to play the Tick... Unless he bulks up considerably or gets CGIed to Hell and back, I don't think he has the physical dimensions of the Tick.

That being said, I'm happy to see that there is still enough interest in the Tick for a second attempt at a live action show, and I dearly hope this one is better than the first.

Whenever I hear the Tick's voice in my head, it is always Patrick Warburton.

Seconded! I also can't watch Bates Motel without thinking of Batmanuel (just like I did with Lost).

On a rooftop, of course. Seems it will be a darker, more serious reboot beginning with the Tick having amnesia. I really hope they double down on Brit Tick's accent, and have someone tell him he's British- Batmanuel would be a prime candidate for impersonating a mentor, or oracle and feeding him terrible advice throughout the series.

Surprisingly enough, our new Tick is taller than Patrick Warburton.

Given that the Tick was pretty firmly rooted in parody and absurdism, I think the trendy "make it darker and edgier!" is probably a misfire.

I don't know- apparently it worked for Deadpool pretty well.

Arguably, the live action one was decidedly darker and edgier than the cartoon, after all- in the same way a sunny morning is darker than noon.
