Subject: Making a display board for Armies on Parade 2016
Hello everyone! I'm Matthew, and I love painting and building! Last year I started painting seriously, and it worked out since I won bronze in a young bloods competition and silver in Armies on Parade! But of course, I can't stop there! My goal is to win gold this year, hopefully!
So my armies and forces right now (that I didn't use last year) are
Space Wolves, with 50+ infantry, a Rhino, 3 Dreads, a couple of characters, bikers, a Land Speeder and 10 Terminators,
Imperial Guard, with a converted Leman Russ and 12 Guardsmen (renegade guard)
and some Tzeentch daemons, 10 horrors currently. Please help with fluff?
OP
Spoiler:
Hey guys! I just won bronze in a painting competition! Yay! So, I've decided to enter Armies on Parade later this year, in October.
I play Space Wolves, but I've started taking allies such as Blood Angels and a Librarius Conclave. I'll write some fluff on this, don't worry.
So, I know a few things: I want the board to
1, have a mountain.
2, have a bunker.
3, have an Honoured Imperium statue somewhere,
4, have an Honoured Imperium aquila in the side of a mountain, and
5, have some sort of lighting effect.
Here's the basic supplies: 2 60x60cm styrofoam sheets, one for the base and one for other scenery and other styrofoam scrap pieces.
A few blueprints. I still haven't decided on a real design...
Here's a bunker I made. I'm thinking about having it embedded in the side of a mountain.
Right now I'm making several 'tests': I'm doing cupcake mold craters and trying out making hills from styrofoam. I'll get cork and bark tomorrow to make hillsides.
So, am I out a bit early? Yes I am. It's 4 months left! But then again I have a lot to paint and build. Wish me luck!

The early stages of this project are lookin really cool too. Is the competition you're entering in Sweden? I've been thinking of making a display board for my Orks and an Armies on Parade comp would be awesome motivation to get it done (in less than five years).

Thanks! Yes, it's in GW Stockholm! I'd love if you entered, there were only five or six people in last year...
So, I've done some work today.
I'm doing some tests, mostly to see how I want the texture and how I'll do things. Here's an example, if this looks good it'll be a cornerpiece. Do you recommend using bark on mountainsides for the texture?
Another test I made, this time with a soldering iron. While it gives a cartoony-ish look, I'm not sure if it looks realistic enough.
A test crater. I really want something scattered around, and a few craters wouldn't be wrong.
A quick sketch of the current plans. The lines are lines for where the mountains/hills will be, and the box is a bunker. I don't know, it feels like somethings missing...
Also, tank traps. How do you feel about having dragons teeth scattered around in the little 'valley' in the middle? Would make sense from a tactical standpoint, and would certainly look cool.
Also, what about having the Honoured Aquila statue lit up by a few led lights North Korea style?
Tip of the bunker is 30x10cm out
In a slope you lose about 4-5cm standing ground on 7cm thick styrofoam. This means I'll have to make the mountain pretty much a vertical drop to have any space at all.
Aquila is 26cm tip to tip, means it'll have to have 13cm on each side to be centered.
If the chokepoint between the hill and the mountain is on average 22cm wide, and I want 1 tank trap every 3 cm, each taking up 1 cm, I need 5-6 for each row. The chokepoint is 20cm long. I'll need around 20-30 traps.
Thanks! I too love watching them, always fun to see what people do.
The foam has been cut!
21cm high and beautiful! I know it's been pretty vague, but I hope you see sort of how it will look.
So, the bunker will be embedded into the mountain, with the aquila in the middle. What about the statue? On the corner hill?
Here's what I need to make a slope out of. So, what do I use for texture? Bark? Soldering iron? Sand? Rocks?
Thanks for watching!
Automatically Appended Next Post: I need help, guys! I realised that the whole thing is sort of... empty. I'll have some variations in the terrain, but I'm not sure what to do on top of the mountain. Another bunker? a checkpoint? A guardpost?

I've been making a lot of progress lately! I've used a wirebrush to roughly shape the board, and made a slope I'm quiet proud of. I've glued the hill in place. Also, there's a small cave in the side of the mountain with just enough space for a single mini. What should I have there? Nurglings? Grots? Alpha Legionnaire?

Ugh my god matthew stop making me realize I need to start working on mine (and actually finishing the army too ) instead of waiting til the last minute like usual.
Thanks! I think so too, I'm glad it's turning out well.

Seriously though good luck and go for the gold!
Don't worry, there's plenty of time left! It's just that although there are 4 months left, I'll be away for 2 of those months, and I am a HUUUUGE procrastrinator so I'll do as much as I can. Also, I have a few hundred points left to paint...
Desubot wrote: Why dont you powder snow it and make it for the wolves.
I'm not quite sure what you mean... yes, I'll have snow on it to fit my Wolves.
Ah. Ye, I'll have Space Wolves accompanied by an Imperial Knight and possibly some Librarians and Blood Angels. I'll have to write some fluff justifying this, though. They're all based on mud, rocks and snow.
Also, I have a small cave with enough space for 1 mini, what should I put in there?
Thanks for the kind words, Buttery. Don't worry, Any army looks good on a display board!
Here's how it looks now. You can see the outline of the aquila in the mountain, and the tank traps in the chokepoint.
I added a rocky outcrop, planning to have my 5 Grey Hunters there.
Maybe having a Land Speeder zooming above the bunker? Would look pretty cool.
A few tank traps. Is it enought? I'm thinking from a tactical standpoint. The bunker has an overview over the canyon, if you try to flank it your tanks get stuck.
I feel a bit stressed, I won't be able to work on it for three weeks or so, and after that I'll go on vacation for a month... So a few more weeks left after that! I'll have to start painting a bit more!
Good, I like them. So right now I want the entire army looking the same direction, fighting some enemy in the canyon. First of all, where do I put the Long Fangs? Thinking about placing them around the statue.
I'll only have 5 Grey Hunters, mostly because I only have 5 I'm proud of. I'll have a Contemptor and normal one. I'll have 4-5 Thunderwolves, depending on how well I paint them, a few Fenrisian Wolves running on top of the mountain, and some Librarians on Bikes zipping around the Knight.
I still need an answer, what should I hide in a small cave?
Great progress, man! I'm really looking forward to seeing what the finished article is going to look like. In fact, it's easy to forget that there's going to be a ton of awesome minis to match the awesome scenery.
As for the SW Dread, I know absolutely nothing about what is the best load-out for the game, but I think the ridiculously OTT Dread with hammer and shield is awesome plus it has the most potential for Hollywood posing, which suits your needs perfectly B-)

I bought some things! So I realised how stupid the 'cave' idea is, so I decided to make something funny!
So I widened the 'cave'...
Started adding cork...
And soon I had a cozy FLGS!
I've bought some skeletons and some Epic Orks!
That Stompa is adorable.
So here's how it'll look: One skeleton has a Stompa and has a somewhat smug look on his face, the other only has infantry looking surprised, hopefully holding a hand out with a dice.

Looking great but I keep thinking that insulation foam might be better than styrafoam for something like this. Easier to cut and smoother for starters.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! and Kyoto, don't worry, it's strong enough.
Here's my progress now. I've used a reaaaaally thick layer of plaster (probably a kilo) on the ground level to even it out.
I've been thinking about adding some trees to the mountian, it would make it look a lot better.
Okay, I need urgent help. What do I add on the sides of the foam? It looks bad with the whole ball texture. Would plasticard all around the sides be ok?
