So I don't know if this has been talked about before. But I was reading through the various formations for probably the millionth time but upon rereading the ghostkeel wing formation it suddenly dawned on me! What if you take 2 of these formations and stick your army behind them granting them obscured plus the stealth and shrouded from the combo of both formations. Take a void shield generator and you literally have the toughest gun line in the game. They all have a 2+ cover save and the enemy has to shoot through the void before they can even do any damage. Imagine a measly little fire warrior with a 2+ cover save. I thought this might be a good idea because there isn't much outside of tau that can ignore cover in large volumes.

Two ghostkeel wings is 780 points for barebone minimal squads, how much "rest of the army" you even have left once you are done upgrading them to functional levels.

Then you need to add heavy marker support (as the ghost wing has very little shooting boosts options within), so your "rest of the army" isn't big.

And what you have left gains the awesome stealth and shrouded combo as long it is within 12 of two pairs of units, one pair from each formation. And ghosts are both big, and not very long ranged.

Its not that impressive.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Plus ignores cover isn't exactly uncommon these days.

Most deathstars run around those kind of points and other than being a giant fire magnet they typically don't have benefits that umbrella the whole army. You could even run one ghostkeel wing and run additional fortification. At 1850 you run can a pretty decent army aside from the ghostkeels and void shields. Markerlights aren't too big an issue here either you use 1 squad of 6 pathfinders per 2-3 ghost keels your looking at pretty good boosts since they gain additional bs from their formation special rule. Ghostkeels are also extremely durable on their own in my opinion easily gaining back their points.

Like I said though I don't know many armies in the current meta that run ignores cover in mass and at high strength. Usually 1-3 units of dedicated ignores cover units which can be prioritized.

Not going to do much good against super-fast assault armies like Daemons and certain deathstar builds (Wolfstar, Seer Council, etc.). All the cover and void shields in the world aren't going to save your army from them.

Let's not forget the almighty wraithknight. A couple of these will thoroughly mess up this lists day.

OSC is just plain better than Ghostkeel Wing.

"better" perhaps but not for the same purpose so...

I think the Ghostkeel Wing is pretty good, maybe even on par with the OSC, which comes with a tax. Super fast assault armies and deathstars are a problem for allot of Tau lists. Ghostkeels do a decent amount of damage and have good durability for their cost, imo.

Depending on the source limit, double Ghostkeel Wing, marker net and a CAD or Riptide Wing, would give allot of armies trouble. In three source areas, you'd probably drop the market net.

One elimination maniple makes this go away. And it's half the points. All you need is to fail a single save From all the robots firing, then you get no less then 12 plasma cannons that ignore cover to the face. = dead ghostkeel. And once it's dead the formation bonus ends and that's that. It's also pretty easy to take down a void shield. It's only AV 12 and any glance or pen drops it.

I've played vrs tau a lot, and the ghost wing thing is awsome. But doubling up and camping behind a shield is not the best use of it. If you want gun line - the hunter cadre? Or whatever it is that lets 3 units fire at once and boost bs, the drone formation that makes them better bs (equip as marker drones) gives much better results.

Something ...... something .... Dark side....

Just use a tidewall its cheaper you get a decent save and it bounces back
