MOUNDS, Okla. (KTUL) — Three nooses hanging from a tree next to a sign warning trespassers to stay off of a homeowner’s property is shocking drivers along Highway 75 near Mounds.
The sign reads, “It’s best not to be hanging around this area after dark”.
The homeowner said the sign is to scare trespassers after he had his trailer stolen a couple months ago.
He said he didn’t intend to associate it with race.
Sean Hasbrouck lives in the area and said he just noticed the sign Sunday.
“I was driving by and it caught my attention because you don’t see nooses hanging from a tree every day,” he said.
He said the nooses is what makes the entire tree inappropriate, not necessarily the sign.
“Even if it’s for somebody who’s trespassing or for something like that, that’s a little overboard right there,” he said.
Nearby business owners said they are angry about the sign and have nothing to do with it.

So both nooses and a reference to being a 'sundown town'* while denying understanding any racial element. Either the owner is an idiot or a fool, or perhaps both.

I have to agree with Ahtman here. If this guy didn't consider the race angle on this, he's a colossal fool.

The problem is specifically the nooses.
If the guy had say targets with the 10 ring hollowed out hung up, or a sign showing his woodchipper with a thief being thrown in, it would be read as "stay off my property" and thats it. It wouod still shock people but wouldnt really be viewed as anything more than a castle doctrine fan.
Hanging nooses in trees is kind of one step short of putting a kkk sign in your front yard from a race perspective, and I cant blame anyone for being uncomfortable about that. Its a well known and dark but of history about much of the South and the way he hung them from the trees, and the sign, point to him being incredibly ignorant of the past or a liar playing dumb to get away with it.

It doesn't even work as a pun, because it says 'no hanging around', but the noose is a threat that you will be hanging around. It needs to say 'like hanging around?' or something like that.

When did nooses become a racist thing? Note I am not advocating for or against this guy. But hanging has been a normal execution method for centuries upon centuries well into the 20th century and wouldn't doubt that some countries still use it. A properly tied noose gives a quick neck breaking death once the platform drops. I would venture to say faaaaar more other races have been executed by hanging nooses than blacks. So how did this become associated with racism?

For those who didn't get this part of US history in high school;
Lynching in the United States was predominantly carried out as mob violence by whites against Blacks (especially Black Men), and the predominant tool of the lynching was to tie a noose around someone's neck and hang them from a tree. Usually a very public tree where everyone could see it the next day. Depending on the place and decade, just about anything could get you lynched. Look at a white man the wrong way. Look at a white woman the wrong way. Talk to a white kid. If some white guys raped your sister, they might just noose you, your dad, your brother, or whoever as a gentle reminder to shut the feth up about it (this actually got worse during the initial years the Civil Right's movement was gaining steam). Don't/Do have sex with your employers wife on the down low. No. I'm completely serious about that last one. It's not a joke. It was not uncommon in the American South for Black men to become caught in a catch-22 scenario with white women, who would cry rape if the man refused, or if the affair was discovered. People complain about men getting an unfair shake about rape now? used to be you didn't get a trial at all if you happened to be the wrong skin color. You just wound up dead. The noose is a symbol of racism because of the targeted way it was used in lynchings to oppress blacks and enforce white supremacy in America during the 19th and first half of the 20th century. And no. It's not "history." Lynchings have occured as recently as 1998, when James Byrd Jr., father of three, was chained by his ankles and dragged to death behind a truck. His killers dumped his body in the middle of his (mostly black) neighborhood, and proceeded to attend a local BBQ.

It became racist when a popular method of execution for thousands of years suddenly just meant one thing in our culture, what was just linked above. Now any association with a noose obviously means racism.

To be fair to the noose, a distinction can be drawn from its use in lynchings, and its use as a means of execution. In execution, the noose is used to snap the neck. Sudden drop, sudden stop. In Lynching, your neck usually wasn't broken. You were hoisted over the branch and died by asphyxiation (a much slower, more agonizing death). On top of that, the deceased in a lynching wasn't a matter of justice, but a matter of "stay in line with my oppression of you, or this happens."
A hang man's noose is unlikely to bring up accusations of racism. A noose on a tree (telephone pools, bridges, and sufficiently tall road signs may also apply) on the other hand...

A properly tied noose gives a quick neck breaking death once the platform drops. I would venture to say faaaaar more other races have been executed by hanging nooses than blacks. So how did this become associated with racism? From the late 1800s to the 1960s, down South. Just like hanging a Confederate Flag on your flagpole, a noose in your yard has the same connotations. I guess growing up in the South, I was exposed to more stories, I guess. My grandmother told us the story of seeing a young man that was suspected/accused of raping a white woman being lynched. When we went to our old camping grounds, she'd point out the tree where it happened (not her yard). Growing up poor, her father used to pick cotton with that man and his family, and he said he'd never believe that kid had done anything to anyone. Anyway, from the googles: Throughout the late 19th century racial tension grew throughout the United States. More of this tension was noticeable in the Southern parts of the United States. In the south, people were blaming their financial problems on the newly freed slaves that lived around them. Lynchings were becoming a popular way of resolving some of the anger that whites had in relation to the free blacks. From 1882-1968, 4,743 lynchings occurred in the United States. Of these people that were lynched 3,446 were black. The blacks lynched accounted for 72.7% of the people lynched. These numbers seem large, but it is known that not all of the lynchings were ever recorded. Out of the 4,743 people lynched only 1,297 white people were lynched. That is only 27.3%. Many of the whites lynched were lynched for helping the black or being anti lynching and even for domestic crimes.

As far as I know, the last hanging lynching in the US was Michael Donald in 1981 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Donald). Anyone in the South who claims they don't see a racist element to nooses hanging from trees is either ignorant or willfully blind.
