Yaho,
Been hearing a lot of complaints and contentions that 40k is bloated and slow, sure thing to the first, but I haven't really encountered the second in recent memory. This may be because i'll have reached my tenth year under The Emperor's banner in October and so the 'slow' parts have been greased by constant repetition, and most of my regular opponents are in same or similar boats.
So I ask you dakka, how quickly can you do a full and strategically meaningful turn 1 & 2 (your turns only) @ the 2k points mark? What takes the longest in your army to resolve? What if anything did you find to help speed up the game tempo? What, in summary, is your turn par time?
In my case the fastest 2k turns 1 & 2 has been 30 minutes combined, using SM infantry w/ IG tanks/flyers.
The biggest contributions were in order:
Fixed size dice containers. Being able to half 16, immediately grabbing multiples of 5-10-20 and so forth makes grabbing saves and prepping shots a <5 second activity.
Colour coded base backs to easily identify squads and equipment instead of playing 'Hunt the Melta Gun', since models generally face the enemy out of habit.
Multiple and colour coded scatter dice - resolve all the plasma cannons at once instead of one at a time + fishing out bounced dice etc.

Depends on the army. Number of units, number of different unit types, presence in different phases of play.
Colour-coded models/practice identifying different models/newer models with larger/more obvious upgrade weapons all help immensely, but I hadn't thought of using colour-coded scatter dice (I like the larger white starter-box scatter dice much better than the ones in the dice sets).

In most games I've played at over 1500 points a single game turn has taken over an hour...
Even when I only take about ten minutes to do my stuff...

Two decent players who know what they're doing should be able to play a 500 point game in about half an hour (so 1000 points in an hour, etc.).
Which is about seven minutes per turn at 1500 points, which is about what I normally take. maybe up to ten for a hoardy army.

If he could justvtalk while rolling dice, instead of having to expend an action point per, I think RL would be much more balanced. Right now TT game timing is underpowered as hell.

If everyone's having fun, I don't care. What with the talk, digressions, making cups of tea, I don't think I've ever played a turn "optimally".
I played in a 5-player, 6000 points per side game last weekend that took us about an hour per turn.

Yeah. I often drag out my games without noticing - I love commenting on what is happening, imagining what the models do or think, etc.
Unfortunately that displeases the ones I play with. :(

I'm a fast player. Most of my turns take about 5 minutes, or up to 15 if there are multiple assaults to work out. In tournaments I almost always finish an hour ahead of the round timer.
I usually play Space Marines, so most of my armies have about 50 infantry and half a dozen tanks. When I play my Imperial Guard my shooting phases are longer but my assault phases are much shorter. When I play my all-tank Space Marine army the turns just fly by.

For my marines probably 15 to 20. The only thing that really slows thing down is an extended psychic phase or multiple units locked in combat. For the most part I'm mapping out what i'm going to do next as my opponent moves and shoots.

When I play 40K, we meet around 4:00 or 4:30 in the afternoon with our lists ready and start setting up the game. That usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.
We are lucky if we get past turn 3 by the time it's 10:00 pm at 1,850 points. We are both relatively new to the game and that's why we agreed to keep it below 1K points for now. A fair portion of that time is spent on us arguing about specific situational rules and searching for solutions online.
We only wrapped one single match since we started a few months ago: 850 points with me as Tau and him as AM.

Yeah, I just don't understand the rush that everyone appears to be in.
Maybe, I'm just old. And Andrew's right... tea doesn't make itself.
Of course, each to their own and everything, but 7 minutes a turn? feth that.

For the vast majority of games, 15-30 minutes depending on points and model count -- making games last 4-6 hours in length, not including maybe a food break in between. Seems to be a comfortable time for everyone involved, because if we are speedy, we can get in a second game; if not, we can have one relaxed, longer game.
The fastest turn times for a 1500ish point game are probably around 10 minutes, with a moderate model count, non-MSU army.
The longest turn times are for ginormous games, and run about an hour. But those games are unusual.
One way we can speed up longer games is to play 2v2, and allow both people on the same side to play simultaneously, with deployment designed so that the majority of forces will initially clash on P1 vs P3, and P2 vs P4 -- allowing all of those moves and combats to happen concurrently. By the time P1 interacts with P4 and P2 with P3 in a significant fashion, a lot of the models have been weeded out already.
In that way, we can get 3000+ games moving along at 20-30 minutes per turn.
