Had a bit of a discussion with a friend who claims that you can take a comms relay as a standalone thing, without buying a building to put it on. Is that the case? That seems an incredibly good bonus for the ~20 points he says it costs.

Yes, Stronghold Assault lists it as Battlefield Debris which can be purchased as either an upgrade for a Fortification or as a Fortification in it's own right.

Incorrect. The Comms Relay has to be purchased with a Fortification

Spoiler:
Battlement & Battlefield upgrades are single pieces of battlefield debris. A list of the relevant descriptions and rules for battlefield debris can be found opposite. Each fortification can purchase a single Battlement & Battlefield upgrade from the list below. These are placed either on the fortification’s battlements (if it is a building with battlements) or anywhere on the tabletop that is wholly within 6" of their fortification.

I'm not so sure about that, though top of page 19 for those who, like me, had their eyebrows shoot up their foreheads.

The actual datasheets refer back to pg 19 for their details, but from what I'm reading you can't just pick and choose from it, you need a data sheet entry first before 'unlocking' it.

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

This is the portion of the rules that confuses people.

Spoiler:
The following list summarises the rules for battlefield debris that can be purchased as an upgrade to a fortification, or as fortifications in their own right.

Just read it carefully and do not read into it.

It is not saying you can take upgrades as fortification in and of themselves.

It is saying some of the things listed in the section are upgrades and some are actual pieces of fortification datasheets found later in the book, and this section is where you will find summaries for the special rules associated with each.

And anyone who still thinks it can be purchased alone, give us the page number for a comms relay that is purchased not as an upgrade. Because the only entry you'll find granting actual permission to take a relay (with points cost) is for a comma relay upgrade.
