So in 40k Space Marine I think I remember a servo skull floating on it's own and moving around. I ordered a couple of skull kits from FW, do you think it would it look odd if I made them independent of a model? Like used a clear peg to post it on.

heck, no. It would be perfectly fine to make an independent servo skull.

Servo Skulls actually fly on their own all the time.

They are only tethered to models because real life gravity and the fact they are plastic.

I would feel bad if I didn't tell you... there are plastic servo skulls in a number of space marine kits...

I gave one horned helmet from the skeleton warriors kit, it was an important character in the narative campaign...

And there are lunatics like me who make them out of WFB-skulls, AdMech-bitz and old pegs from plastic-bats/arrows.....
I know.....

The Inquisition codex makes use of stand-alone servo skulls deployed separate to characters - they don't have stat-lines, and are more markers / tokens than anything. I'm planning on using sturdy wire or thin brass rod for mine as I think using a clear GW flying stand would be too bulky, but YMMV.

There are plenty of independently based Servo Skull models.

They can also be made really cheaply with a bit of modelling - you just need a skull (not hard to get hold of, given that this is 40k) and a few bits of wire for the cable/tendrils- I used some cut-up and twisted paperclips for mine. They look like they're trailing behind the skull, but they're actually what's holding it up.
If you have some tech-y bits you can add, that's always a bonus.
I ended up with about seven or eight independent servo-skulls for my Mechanicus warband in INQ28.

One cool conversion when GW still had bitz order was to take a Cullexus assassin head and stick that on a bit of wire for a Servo Skull. Quick and simple, it was one of the more badass looking ones. That was when you could order an Assassin head from GW directly. Now you basically have to buy the entire assassin and then figure out something to do with the body if you wanna try this.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I made a few for my inquisitors out of random servo skulls that have come with various kits as well as a few I sourced on eBay. I used some skull covered scenic bases and painted them up. They are pretty basic but they do the job.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I have about 20 floating/flying servo skulls grafted to heavy weapons which I use as CSM havocs for Apoc when I just need to have more heavy weapons

I actually really Cheaped out and just printed a few pictures of servo skulls and glued them on to round bases. They're more or less marker counters to me.
