In the Beast Arises, Book 8, I stumbled upon a passage in which a new titan class I've never heard before of being mentioned.

Spoiler:

After the Mechanicus Ship gets REKT by being pulled unto the planet via a gravitic whip said titan guards over the command center. Noone seems to pay it any special mention.

Besides the novelty of an entirely new class of titan, it is also described as 3-legged. All titans to date are the standard 2-leg variants, as are all Dreads and other walkers beside the Onager that I'm aware of.
So getting a 3 legged one is quite surprising. Considering its placement and possible use, it could be a class that is (or was, considering this takes place in M32 and could have been lost now) only in use by Mechanicum/AdMech.
Is there any basis for this thing (like the Deredeo Dread) or did Mr. Thorpe simply invent it? Why then not just use an already known class like a Reaver?
What is this thing? I wanna know!

Never heard of it. As far as making something up instead of using a preexisting unit the galaxy is a big place and it'd be incredibly boring if it were 100% constrained to things that exist on the tabletop.

It's also the Beast series, and the authors of a book in it not paying much attention to the setting is par for the course.

You mean the setting that's 8,500 years in the future? Or the setting that's 1,500 years in the past?

I mean, it's possible that they'd invent a new Titan class in that time, but it seems more likely that the authors just didn't care.

Sounds interesting, actually, though most of the latest additions to armories of different races are a sheer disappointment to me. As well as The Beast Rises series.

Still, I'd like to know more about three-legged titan. Maybe someone can provide some more citations from the book or share the numbers of pages? I do not want to read the whole book for several sentences.

I'll flick through the book once I get home. Luckily I do read the english original, so pages will be adequate

I've got the eBook version so no page number, but it's chapter 9:

"The silhouette of a rare tri-legged Punisher-class Titan blocked out the sky above, standing guard over the upper ranks of Martian nobility with tezlan accelerators gleaming. The containment fields of its underslung plasma annihilator vibrated through the ground, and Laurentis’ bionics, like a heartbeat"

I'd assume it's a "War of the Worlds" joke. Those crazy Martians and their giant three legged war machines. Did it happen to be armed with some sort of melta weapon?

That's what I though, but 'tezlan' sounds kind of Necron-y...

There's two more mentions of it:

"The deafening blast of a war-horn from the looming Punisher – the Modus Destructor – warned those below that it was moving."

"Turning about its waist axis, the Modus Destructor brought its twin accelerators to bear on some target out of sight of Laurentis. A high-pitched wail split the air moments before the weapons lit up with a burst of azure light. Laurentis’ inhuman sight picked up pulses of electromagnetic charge as a hail of hundreds of solid missiles flared into the darkness, shredding whatever engines or batteries had launched the rockets."

Also, there's mention of another class of titan:

"And dreadnoughts. And stompers. And gargants, some larger than the mighty Warlord and Executor Titans that were at the forefront of the Adeptus Mechanicus attack"

Could it not just be a particularly well-hung warlord titan?

Nope, Gav Thorpe.
I've mainly read his DA Novels and while they are not perfect, they nonentheless are pretty good.
Simply inventing 2 new titan classes seems a bit weird, though. Nothing he would do just for gak 'n giggles.

It could be that they're trying to force the point that 'Beast Arises' is a different setting to the HH and 40k books, or they might be laying the groundwork for 'new' titans for AT...

@Z-Ray: Heh, bullseye.
It still sounds interesting thought. It sounds way more appealing to me, than Nemesis Dreadknights, Centurion suits and most of the other recent stuff. Thanks to everyone who posted quotes about it.

Pardon my offtopic, but what's an AT? Edit: thanks, beast.

Yeah, that would be my guess - they're going to need to bring out new stuff to tempt those of us with old 6mm Epic armies to buy new stuff

It is the AdMech, they are supposed to have all kinds of incredibly rare and ancient technological marvels that no one but they knows about.
Thorpe probably just made it up for that reason.

Pretty much this. Plus, the battle was (spoilers) about a massive crusade launched at the heart of the biggest greenskin Waagh since the emperor. bringing the entirety of the martian arsenal to this battle that had the Primarch Vulkan leading it would be no stretch. It's Sci-Fi after all, and who knows what else the mechanicus has in their vaults!
