I really like what's been going on for the last few years with the small more focused codices. I mean there are misses and issues, but I think GW seems to do a decent job capturing the themes of these armies in the rules and making them play differently. What are your guys thoughts on these smaller armies, harlequins, haemonculus covens, skitarrii, genestealers, deathwatch, ect...

Other than the incomprehensible decision to split cult mechanics in half making it have the most awkward non synergy set of rules to play with which could have been so much better had they not done that. I still think I like the Skitarii feel the most, and even missing some things it can play ok without allies from what i've seen.

My favorite is the Legion of the Damned. The stand alone army that will always lose.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

Not any more! Kill Team's "You're On Your Own" rule has them deploying on the board instead of via Deep Strike!

Back on topic, Legion of the Damned pulled me into 40K, and I still have a love for them even though I've only run 'em once so far.

Assassins is almost an auto include in any Imperial list. I'm looking forward to running multiple Culexus Assassins with multiple psyker-heavy Inquisitorial Detachments, just for giggles.

And my current love: Ad Mech, specifically Cult Mechanicus.

Probably scions, but I am biased because I am toying with them lately.

I do not think thay can work alone above 1000 pts, but I like the concept of the best possible normal humans (inb4 Sisters players) and the fact thay in base of the loadout and deployement the squads play in a dramatically different way. And then they either die or die horribly.

Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?

I don't like the fact that my Daemonhunters army takes 3+ Codexes to put on the table these days. The mini-list concept is neat, but the implementation ('yes, these are all stand-alone army books now and you must take a full detachment from each, even though this one is an inflexible mess built out of slight variations on a single unit (GK) and this other one is five entries copy-pasted wholesale from another book (MT)...') just makes it feel like a money-grab.

I'd rather have seen a compilation of mini-lists put together in one place with some thought given to how they'd interact with each other.

The Harlequin book feels like the most complete Codex of the lot to me. It isn't cobbled together from other books' unit entries, it feels cohesive as a standalone entity, and the only 'wait, why can't I do...' that comes up frequently is the lack of an HQ choice/characters on jetbikes. Skitarii are close on their heels, but the lack of a transport vehicle bothers me (especially with the awesome-looking 30k armoured trains).

Will concede the 'normal humans' point. We're special enough to have an Invulnerable save over here in the Adepta Sororitas.

Inquisition mostly due to them being probably the most fluff rich mini faction that can be the justification for some crazy army combinations or plots. Also their army has some really exotic wargear and units ranging from daemonblades and psychotroke grenades to lascannon monkeys and daemon hosts.

I really want to say Harlequins, the units themselves are all pretty good (though bikes and the Voidweaver are over priced) but half the formations and the Masque detachment are rediculously restrictive and the lack of an HQ gives you no other options.

Thank you all for your responses. I mainly asked because i'm trying to decide which new army to collect. I've been theory-listing and checking out model ranges, and like I said I think the small dexes do a better job of being cohesive and translating the fluff of an army to the rules. They're not as powerful because they are all pretty specialized, but i like that.

I'm stuck between Genestealer cult, Skitarii, and Deathwatch at the moment. All the model ranges are great looking and the rules seem fun. Although out of the three the cult would be the most expensive to collect by a huge margin.

Scions, cause it would have been more grimdark to scale back the marines and have these guys as their gradual replacements.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Sisters of Battle should definitely qualify as a mini codex and they are my favorite. They have been ignored and downtrodden for over a decade but they can still get the job done with only about 6 pages of rules, 4 pages of fluff, and a model line older than some players.
