I've been slowing painting up a homebrew Loyalist Space Marine chapter for a while now. While I like it, I want to do a small force of something else.

In my buying of used Space Marine lots, I've found myself with a small horde of 90s (but post Rogue Trader) marines that just don't fit the scale or asethetic of my current Space Marine army.

What I want to do is throw them together into an old-school force, something akin to Gitzplitta's epic Mantis Warriors army from a while back. Part of the project's constraints is that I can't use any models made in the 21st century. This is intended to be a small hobby project with the cohesive aesthetic of old-school models and will likely never see a gaming table.

I also want to reap the attention one gets from the internet from doing a canonical Space Marine chapter really, really well. Because, hey, we all love the fluff.

I like bright colors on my minis so they look good in my display cabinet.

I'm tempted to do a Dark Angels successor chapter because I have some old metal Deathwing terminators that I'm not sure what else to do with, but the only visually interesting one (Angels of Redemption) seems a bit overdone.

I'm considering Rainbow Warriors for late 80s cheese, but that seems better suited to Rogue Trader models.

I'm considering the Celebrants for having cool, very unique armor, but there isn't much fluff to them.

I'm very open to suggestions from people who know the lore better than I of awesome canonical Chapters that you'd love to see given a lot of love on 20+ year old models.

I was trying to find the chapters image from the second edition codex when I found this. I think this comes from the very start of 3rd edition, so all the chapters are from the lore as it stood at the end of 2nd. A lot of the minis are definitely the old metal marines.

I say Stormlords or Nova Marines.

Awesome, thanks! This image is definitely the sort of thing I was looking for, a nice lay-out of old-school painted models.

I was already considering the Stormlords when you mentioned it, I think it's now my top contender. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'd say go for something quartered or halved...something like the Storm Lords.

Doom Eagles are 90s-tabulous.

I love how Raptors are in that image twice.

The Mentor Legion is listed incorrectly as well (the name is on the marine under the actual Mentor Legion marine)
