So, I've been thinking about whipping up some 'ard boyz. I honestly don't use them terribly often, but it might be nice to have some for when I do, instead of just using normal boyz and calling them 'ard boyz.

I could, I suppose, just use boyz, make sure they have helmets, and attach extra shoulderpads and fings, but even that seems like too subtle a distinction.

Plus, I don't want to go too overboard, and make them look like walking piles of garbage, though that is honestly how they are described as in.....I think the 4th ed codex.

So, short version - anyone used orruk 'ardboyz for 40k 'ardboyz? Did you like the way they came out? It's right in the name, I suppose, and I think making them hold sluggas shouldn't be too hard.

Ditto for black orks, I suppose.

Orruk 'ardboyz are a great option if you have some excess sluggas around- PLUS, they now come in packs of 15, or the start collecting box if you want some gore grunta "nob bikerz" to go with them.

EDIT: one thing I would note, make sure the 'ardboy armor has colors on it- if you paint it like chainmail, they'll look very AoS still. With some bright colors, it'll be more 40k.

Yeah, I was honestly surprised by the relative affordability of the 15 man box set.

Hrmm. A thought - is there a good plan to attach sluggas to the generally closed fists of the orruk boyz? Probably clip their weapon off slightly above the fist, drill a hole in the slugga, and glue it onto the stub of their weapon?

I just gave them massive shoulder pads. I added in space marine shoulder pads on one side for every space marine chapter we beat. You can use plasticard or just find fun things to make shoulder pads like the extra vehicle tracks.

Helmets, shoulder pads, and optionally a bit of torso armour if you happen to have a suitable base model (WHFB/Sigmar) or something the right size and shape in the bits box, but it's not essential. (If using WHFB/Sigmar models, put a bit of effort into making them more 40K-ish - usually as simple as mixing and matching some modern/40K bits and/or adding a few bolts and rivets.)

Anything more armour than that and it will start looking like a Meganob.

As Javin says, looted marine shoulder pads are fluffy, look good, and are cheap and easy bits.

If you already have a number of helmeted boyz, consider up-armouring them into 'Ard boyz - 'no helmet means a boy' makes things easier for everyone on the game table.

Here's one of my regular bad moon boyz mobs:

And here's my bad moon ardboyz:

I used a combination of the helmeted heads, iron gobs and shoulderpads from the boyz kit, armour plates from the fantasy orcs sprue, heads from the burnas and stormboyz kits, a couple of other armoured heads I had lying about, and space marine shoulder pads.

As you can see, the ardboys have more yellow on them in general (mostly on the armour panels, to make them stand out) and, so there's no confusion in game, the arboyz have all got matching red trousers. If it's red-trousered, it gets a 4+.

'Ard Boyz are a kit I haven't started yet but some of the bits I plan on using are land speeder hatches (They are left over after building a land speeder Typhoon). I plan to fit these on the arms like a buckler/shield. I've also got some of the original Rhino front plates which would look pretty good used like riot shields. They may need to be trimmed to fit though.
Since Ork Boyz usually have braces and wristbands it makes it easy to stick on armour plates and make them look fastened in place.

I'd also recommend any tank hatches you have left over as well. I think it was the Space Marine game made by Relic that modelled the 'Ard Boyz with shields and I thought it looked pretty good.

I have a Mob of 10 'Ard Boyz I knocked together from a unit of Black Orcs. It was fairly straightforward, just adding a few Sluggas here and there and picking bits that suited my fancy.

I love this idea Orks really lend themselves to personalisation based on real-life events.

Your Warboss gets krumped? Replace an arm with a mechanical one, or add a bit of cybernetics to his head to represent him being 'repaired' by the Painboys.

Nuke a Rhino during a battle? I feel a new looted wagon coming along...

@Nazrak. What is your recipe for the Ork skin, if you don't mind me asking (read shamelessly pilferring)?

I always did prefer the olive drab scheme to really garish greens.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.
