With the rumors swirling and 8th edition already overdue (assuming the pattern of each edition lasting half as long as the edition before holds) it's time to take out the crystal balls and predict what we will see.

Note: this poll allows multiple choices

I expect 8th edition will be the most disappointing thing since my son.

Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?

Since they have been resurfing old stuff maybe updated eldar exodites? That could be fun!

It'd be hard to worse. They'd have to make it somehow more bloated, less balanced, more convoluted, and more expensive.

I honestly don't expect much of a change or improvement in the next edition. Call it whatever you want, but I'm tempering my expectations based on their history, which is generally that of great ideas marred by poor execution. They may try to fix some of the problems with 7th, but I think they'll end up creating more in the process.

I don't know honestly, GW has no track record they ever keep to really. But in term of what I expect/hope?

I hope they fix the balance issues within the game, both internal and external. I don't like the power creep but at this point if they went backwards against it to heavily they would lose a LOT of players whose $100 models just became irrelevant.

Something else though, I have been waiting since 4th edition for a new Ork codex, we finally got one in 7th and it somehow got significantly worse then the 4th edition one. You would have thought that in 6 years they could write a good codex but no. So 8th edition is going to probably be the last time I play Orks competitively if they don't fix the massive inherent problems in the ork codex.

The rule books being invalidated is the most real answer, isn't it? that kind of happens every new edition.

Nope. Assuming you consider the codexes rulebooks. It's this backwards compatibility that has got us in this complete fustercluck that 40k is currently in. Only a hard reset a la 3rd ed. will do any good.

I'm expected a big change frankly. I'm hoping for a slimmed down version of the rules and hoping for removal of all the books a la AoS. I want the game to still be 40k, just not as convoluted and full of rules. I also expect balance to be heavily fixed. If all armies could be brought to the same competitiveness the game might be in better shape

Because that's what happened with every edition release.

If I am not mistaken, the psychic phase changed quite a bit...

As a player wanting to get into the game hoping they keep some things from 7th like detachments, which I'm sure aren't going anywhere but anyway.

I'm hoping for a general slimming down of some rules and maybe a temporary update in the new book, to fill in till that races 8th edition codex comes out.

At this point I am completely looking forward to them pulling some great learnings in from AoS and making the game a bit streamlined and even more fun.

Totally looking forward to it and totally on board.

Streamlined =/= better. Better = better.

Arguably, the games needs to be a bit more complex with as many models as there are in the game.

Just Streamline™ to put death from the skies into the core rules to try to force people to use it even more. Then a suppliment based minigame about being able to lock the door/controls on fortifications you brought along and to also unlock them so they can be used. Which can then later be jammed into the core rules for 9th in 2018.

It'll involve d4s, d12s and a d16.

I agree that "no one should have freaked from 6th to 7th" but that doesn't mean they didn't... just peep back to 2014 here on Dakka. And there were some big changes, adding the Psychic Phase was certainly one of them, new allies chart, but also Unbound - which was met with "sky is falling" reactions, Lords of War in regular builds (the same thing), and don't forget Maelstrom of War... and some were also mad that a new edition had come so soon after they purchased 6th edition;

Expect minor changes that fix a few things while the law of unintended consequences is in full force, rules written by people who have apparently not played them, or any other game.

Bloated rulebooks with a lot of duplication, invalidating all that has gone before to no real benefit.

I'd actually like the AoS treatment in so far as a full reboot, if I need all the books I have again I'd like it to be worth it, not a minor tweak here and there that costs money but doesn't really sort the game out.

They have shown with LotR:SBG they can write a good hero led skirmish game when they have a clean slate, I just hope they use the abilities they occasionally show flashes of, think a bit about making the rules a framework for where they want to go for the next three/four years so stuff released later fits in reasonably well.

Even just the last bit would make me happy

I think it will be rise of the tanks and assault. If they make all the bad stuff good again, people will have ro reshuffle their armies, meaning they can sell lots of stuff people haven't been buying as much of.

I'm expecting a Battle for Vedros/AOS rules-level rewrite, without the destruction of existing lore (or at least not as destructive). No existing codex will be viable day one, but there will be free downloadable unit conversion PDF's until they get new books out (Chaos first, Space Marines second, then Eldar, Tau and then Astra Militipilflarium/Orckxs/New oldcrons).

I don't think the free rules will be quite as bad as the free AOS war scrolls, but they certainly won't be up to the snuff as whatever they put in its place - you WILL want to buy the rules intead of using the underpowered "free" stuff.

So a nice step back to 5th ed sort of? Would be nice to have them more balanced again, gunlines/invisible are boring and it's boring where they're mostly all that works.

It hasn't gotten worse than late 5th/most of 6th yet. We're not being drowned in an endless avalanche of Rhinos anymore. (Before some smarta** points out the Gladius Strike Force imagine a game where every single army on every table in every game store in every country in the world is a Gladius Strike Force and you'll have some idea of what 5th was like.)

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.
