Occurred to me during the makings of dinner. By my standards there are 3 different considerations.

Possible: The human can actually eat the flesh.
Practical: Eating the ork is an acceptable food source for the human.
Permitted: The reaction a superior officer would have to the ork being eaten.

Thus is my criteria. Permitted is the least important, as there are always desperate sieges where the officers would look the other way. If there are any sources, please point me in their direction (I do want a new book...)

If you allow yourself to be killed and ingested, your soul is forfeited.

I seem to remember there being a story where Guardsmen cook and eat Ork meat.

Not sure of the source though, or the context.

Orks are fungus, so technically you could cook them and serve them as mushrooms.

I believe it's possible and practical if you have no other source but Orks in your local area. Permitted depends on the superior officer.

Holy Terra.

I think the 6th ed ork codex stated that ork is the staple food of other Orks in war zones, so I see no problem with humies eating them too.

Depends on the sort of ork i guess. Not all mushrooms are eadible. And most mushrooms aren't tasty.

Orks aren't completely fungal. The fungus is their immune system and takes the place of some of their organs, meaining they have some liquid organs.

You could probably eat ork if it was tenderized enough and the fungus wouldn't kill/consume/liquify you.

On the other hand dead orks release more fungal spores so you'd risk the growth of orks in whatever place you tried to eat them.

"Show me where it says that in the codex!" said Learchus.
"You know brother that I cannot." said Uriel.

I think if cooked very very thoroughly. Like with heavy flamer cooked. (and then in open flame cooked). The spores are good and dead, and are not released by the Ork flesh any further. Hence when ork infestations are present, flamers are used to stem the tide, such as when a lower section of a hive city has an ork problem. Burn everything!

I dout it would taste any good. But just cook it all the way through.

People prepare them to be served with cheese.
Just about everyone in the Imperium digs Fenrisian Green Grox Cheese.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

As Ork spores are destroyed by burning them, it is doubtful whatever remained would be at all appetizing (on top of the fact it is fungus, therefore not actually food). Ork spores need to find a suitable place to germinate, which means they probably won't germinate in a person, but they would probably end up germinating in the sewer system.

Mushrooms are okay. I'll eat them, but if I don't have to I won't

...

Almost heresy, but ok.

back on topic, i imagine even uncooked, someone's digestive system isn't the best growing condition for fungus. what with the acids an all.

then again, if some of the spores got caught in your esophogus on the way down...

realism is a lie

I imagine it would be extremely tough seeing as how muscular they are. I also can't help but think that Ork meat would be similar to wild hog meat, meaning that if they get riled up they release a pheromone that spoils the meat.
