Greetings,

After about 20 odd years away from the hobby, I've finally decided to pick up the brushes again to paint up some Eldar and start playing again. If memory serves me correctly, the last time I played I used Squats against a friends Harlequins....

I'm having to learn how to paint again - I painted some Scions by 'dipping' them a few weeks ago. I think they look pretty good, but I don't think Eldar would look great dipped! If anyone has any feedback on my painting, please feel free to let me know. I decided to start by painting the turret of a fire prism to test my colour scheme. I also quite fancy using the turret to turn into 'counts as' vyper jetbikes. I think I need to thin the paint a bit more, but I'm happy with the start I've made. Obviously, some of it is still bare plastic!

GrumpyMini,

Based on the photo are you not priming your model before painting? Unless that grey is your primer colour...just curious as paint often will rub off plastic, metal and resin after heavy use if there is no primer to adhere to.

Sincerely,

CB

Hi,

The model is primed, I've just kept the parts separate to paint. The top section was primed white, the other section will be primed black.

At the moment I'm just working out how to place all of my magnets - I want to make it possible to use it as a Fire Prism and Night Spinner. I've put magnets on the jetbikes I've bought as well - the were easy! Reading a few websites it seems going overboard on scatter lasers/shuriken cannons won't win me many friends, but I'd still like some options......

I'm also playing about with the thought of buying a few more of the turrets. Convert a few weapons, and use them as vypers. What do you think?

First, Welcome to Dakka! And Eldar.

Just a straight FP turret could work as a vyper, but the lack of propulsion units seems a little off. If you don’t like the vyper kit, the harliquins have some bikes that might work.

Lot of thin coats is required, especially for Eldar, as you want that smooth sleek look. It’s a pain, but pays off in the end.

I just recently finished building and painting my Fire Prism, with magnets to swap out. Here is a WIP pic that shows how I placed things:
Spoiler:

I went with the flush mount. The hard part was cutting the prism parts flush. I used an old hacksaw; a more appropriate tool (hobby saw) would have been better. Then it was just a mater of sinking magnets into the parts, and using a little GS as filler. The 3mm magnets I used are just barely strong enough for the long prism cannon. If I had to do it over again, I’d double stack them in the turret part for more grip, and see if I could fit two on the gun side as well. It works, just a bit wobbly for my tastes.

Do you have an army size/goal? Of is this a build as you go kind of project?

Thanks for the advice!

At the moment it's just a 'paint what I like army', but I'll see where I go from there. At the moment I've probably got about 800 points worth of models to paint.

If you're having problems with the magnets on the Fire Prism, I can drop hints on how not to do it ...
Mine works, but I have to jam bluetac into the cavities to hold the prism on.

Always good to see more Eldar on dakka I like the scheme. Should be really striking.

Have you come up with a name or fluff for your craftworld yet?

I've had a few hours to do some more painting today. I've just realised how bad my photography skills are though!

At the moment I have 2 of the 'start collecting' sets. I'm going to paint them up, then start getting in a few games under my belt. I've ordered some bigger magnets for the fire prism models. The ones I've used on the jetbikes will probably be strong enough for the main weapons, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Longer term I fancy adding an Avatar to the army - I fancy a nice centre piece for the force! How that will fit in with all of the jetbikes I'm not sure, but I'll see how it goes. I'd also quite like a lot of vypers - I've ordered some bits online to see what I can come up with as I'm not a massive fan of the current models.

I don't think I'm going to add in any of the wraith models (just now), but I think everything else if fair game!

I've made some more progress with the painting, although apologies for the poor picture quality. I've spent time magnetising everything. I can swap all of the weapons on the jetbikes (still being painted).

Everything is still WIP!

I've also had a play with the fire prism turret. I've put magnets to join the weapons, so that it can also become a nightspinner. I haven't glued the turret on, on have secured it with more magnets. This means I can remove it, and the plan is to also be able to use it as a counts as vyper - I should be able to mount the vyper's weapon options where the actual prism cannon would go (still waiting for the bits to arrive). I've ordered another turret to give me some more options to play with.

I've bought more models, although I'm leaving them on the sprue until I'm ready to paint them. So far I have
- Farseer on Jetbike
- Warlock on Jetbike
- 12 x Jetbikes
- 2 x Fire Prisms (or Vypers)
- 3 x Wave Serpents
- 3 x Dire Avenger Squads
I recon it will be 1500-2000 points

If I play about with magnets and buy some more turrets, the plan is to have 5 Grav tank chassis, that I can make into Fire Prisms/Night Spinners/Falcons/Wave Serpents as required.

I have done a bit more work -
- Painted some Dire Avengers
- Kit bashed some Shining Spears. I know they aren't the most popular, but I thought 'what the hell'.

Does anyone have any tips for using them? The only advice I've had so far, is don't!

Ooh I like your kitbashed Spears really dynamic pose you've got there.

As for using them, you won't see anyone spamming them like Scatbikes, but they're still a solid enough unit. Good escort for a jetbike Autarch, and pack quite a nasty punch. A little expensive, but as far as I'm concerned Craftworld Eldar are in the enviable position of being able to take a couple of the less competitive units and still have a strong army at the end of it

I say give them a try one or two min squads of 3 would be a good starting place

Just a quick update on where I'm up to. I've realised over the last few weeks that I'm not as quick a painter as I thought....

3 completed Windriders (6 more still to go)

5 Dire Avengers nearly finished, just some highlights and basing to do (10 more still to do)

Got some paint on the first Shining Spear (2 more still to do). I decided to go for a darker than standard scheme for these ones, Still a fair bit to do with these.

Fire Prism more or less finished (4 more still to go!). I've fully magnetised this one, so that I can use it as a Night Spinner. I'm also trying to make the chasis as flexible as possible, so am trying to work out how to use it as a Falcon (pictured below) as as Wave Serpents (slightly more tricky)

By magnetising the turrets, I have got a nice counts as Vyper in my opinion (can make 3 of these at the moment)
