Warlord Games obtain 2000 AD miniatures licence
Renowned firm to create new line of miniatures and games based on 2000 AD characters

3 hours from now
Warlord Games is to produce a new line of miniatures and games based on the legendary British comic book, 2000 AD.

The worldwide licence covers miniatures games, scenery and collectable miniatures sets based on series and characters from the weekly comic, which is the home of Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Nemesis the Warlock, and a whole galaxy of characters from over 40 years.

Game development and designs are in the very early stages but initial plans are for a game based on the world of Strontium Dog, the popular post-apocalyptic series where mutated humans such as Johnny Alpha are forced to become bounty hunters.

Paul Sawyer, Head of Product Design at Warlord Games, says "Many of us at Warlord are ardent 2000 AD fans so the chance to take on a licence to work with the stories we grew up with and continue to avidly enjoy was something of a dream come true. We have many ideas to bring the wonderful stories from our favourite strips - old and new - to the tabletop and work has begun in earnest to do justice (pun intended) to Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Flesh, Sláine, Kingdom and many of their sister strips. Although development of our plans and designs are in very early stages we hope the first game to see the light of day will be set in the world of Strontium Dog, Johnny Alpha - we'll divulge more details in coming weeks and months though. If a mere Earthlet might dare to quote The Mighty Tharg: this is going to be scrotnig!".

Keith Richardson, licensing manager for 2000 AD, said: "Knowing how many of the Warlord staff are fans of 2000 AD and seeing the wonderful craftsmanship in their work has me really excited. Together I’m positive that we will produce some truly zarjaz games."

Warlord Games is a leading light in the tabletop miniature games industry. Warlord is currently developing games and miniatures for Doctor Who through licence from the BBC and has its own science fiction game written by legendary games developer, Rick Priestley - Beyond the Gates of Antares. Warlord has many game systems based on military history - from the award-winning World War II game produced in conjunction with Osprey Publishing - Bolt Action, to its massed battle games - Hail Caesar, Pike & Shotte and Black Powder. www.warlordgames.com

Here's hoping they won't be as gak as the character models from the Doctor Who range..

Also makes you wonder if this why they've decided to drop Mongoose's range of Dredd stuff a while ago.

I'm confident this is exactly why the Judge Dredd line was dropped (which sucks, because it was really enjoyable).

Here's hoping for the best! Warlord has earned my trust.

The Dredd Miniatures Game was a fantastic set of rules - like you say, really enjoyable.

Understatement right there.

The models were either leftovers from a few decades ago and really showed their age, or newer works that certainly looked awfully.. wonky to say the least.

I can really see Strontium dog working as a skirmish game, the various mutant bounty hunters and their prey would make great models. Some of the others I'm not so sure of

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

Huh, which models were "leftovers from a few decades ago"? All seem to have been sculpted from 2004 on up.

Supposedly a big Marlborough push in February, so probably retooled WSS. But other than those and the skeletons, what else do you need?
Especially in a thread where people are complaining about Dredd sculpts which are infinitely superior to most of the early WGF offerings.

Warlord has now also posted about it, though it looks like it's the same blurb as posted over at 2000AD: http://www.warlordgames.com/warlord-games-obtain-2000-ad-miniatures-licence/

I dunno, I like the wonky JD models personally. I think they're fun.

Unfortunately now I find myself on a crusade to collect all that I can before I can't find them anymore. :(

Warlord is still having something of a sale I think, though IIRC Mongoose is also still working on KS rewards that are long overdue.

Interested to see where this goes.

I loved the Mongoose models - they were so in keeping with the art style of their source - bought loads and loads.

Strontium Dog his really great skirmish setting potential, guess they might also go down the Judge Dredd / Rogue Trooper route for the large scale battles.

Looking forward to Durham Red model.

I love them, personally. They fit the wonky style of most of my favorite eras and story arcs of JD (1980-1988 or so)

So do I. I have at least one set of everything they released - and about a dozen of the Citi Def and Sovs for sweet Apocalypse War games.

All that's left IIRC are specialist bikers - zombies and robots, and a 3d printed Riot Wagon and Mo-Pad. Maybe Nero, too. But I've gotten at least one of everything and it's been a lot. 99% complete at this point. I think I'm also one of about 50 people that own a Manta

Interesting news about Strontium Dog.

Wonder if we'll see any other 2000AD properties down the line?

I certainly wouldn't mind a modern sculpted Nemesis and Torquemada...

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

Wasn't there going to be a Rogue Trooper game a few years back?

What happened with that?

Hopefully they'll at least be on the same level as some of the recent Konflikt stuff and some of the Bolt Action plastics, which were quite nice. The Warlord Judge Dredd stuff had a degree of charm but there's only so far you can go.

The biggest indicator someone is a loser is them complaining about 3d printers or piracy.

I gave the Dredd models the benefit of the doubt and ordered several gangs. I didn't think it was possible but they actually looked worse in the flesh than they did online. And looking at the images online nearly broke my screen. Complete and utter abominations of abortions of sick mockeries of miniatures. And that's being kind. Of all of them, the Dark Judges were the absolute pinnacle. Each one was stunningly hilarious. Mortis looked like a drunk uncle dancing at a family wedding.

I started buying 2000AD in 1984, so grew up with the awesome foursome of Ezqerra, McMahon, Smith, Bolland. None of that classic era translated to the absolutely puny Judges or woefully sculpted punks. The sad irony is that it took me the best part of 2 years to offload those blasted boxes, and then it was at a fraction of what I paid. Amazingly, they have become collectable. More amazingly, people actually exist who like them. Go forth and fill your knee-pads, chaps!

The best Dredd games we had were using Necromunda models or variants thereof - Heresy's Delaque style models made an excellent gang of punks. The Foundry poses and sculpts were better, but just not enough variety.

I really hope Warlord do something with Dredd. Matthew Sprange constructed an absolute cracker of a set of rules, easily one of the best skirmish rules sets out there. It deserves to be Mongoose's legacy to the world of miniature games and waaaay more people need to play it. Just with new models

Strontium Dog is awesome, but seems a strange place to start. I hear Rogue Trooper is finally being delivered and the casts done by Warlord - I haven't seen any models other than what was on the kickstarter page, but they looked good. Maybe Warlord will add these to the repertoire?

Can't wait to see how this turns out !

And there are just so many characters that they can pick up on. I wonder if there is a chance of a plastic Norts and Southers kits for Rogue Trooper?

I didn't think all of the existing range were that bad. They're not up there with the high-end stuff admittedly, but I thought most of them were perfectly serviceable on the tabletop.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

Don't Wargames Foundry still have a 2000AD range? Always thought their (small) range was way better then the Mongoose offerings - just wished they'd been able to expand. IIRC, their original version of Hammerstein was spot on. Might have to check the range out again in case they have to pull them in light of Warlords license

Seems like they did a good job reflecting the quality of the show into the metal minis.

How dare you say such a thing about a British institution !

Ruglud - the Wargames Foundry range is indeed a good one, although seemed to have jumped up in price quite a bit the last time I looked.

So I take I can pass on Season 9? Was not a fan of Season 8.
