I've decided in the new year now I have more time available that I'd make the three salamanders for my IG that I've been holding off for the last year or so. However when deciding what kit to use I also realised this is an opportunity to make the three earthshaker artillery carriages I've been thinking about wasting money from for ages.

Now this will be a steal if I pull it off, for £31 (well likely £45 with all the parts) I can get a salamander and earthshaker carriage, and while I've made a salamander before and found it fairly easy, I'm quite terrified on the prospect of making the carriage. The main issue I have is the fact I play mainly at warhammer world.... which means..... yep no third party modelling parts. My initial plan is to make some wheels out of wood (easy and cheap), as the idea of making some wheels bulky enough out of plasticard seems a tad daunting, however any ideas on how I could make the whole thing look fairly convincing?

and for some ideas on the carriage.. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299777-earthshaker-platform-battery/

and here is a better set up for 100% scratch built carriage http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/439426.page

The soviets had one field gun that used tracks for mobility.

And 40k has no shortage of tracks and track units.

What about wheels from one of the various Warhammer cannon?

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Jhe90 is talking about the Soviet B-4, the 203mm howitzer that was so heavy in carriage that they used freewheeling tracks to dissipate ground pressure.

If you wanted to try this, the Taurox tracks would be a potentially good source.

That's a really good idea and they're fairly common to get hold of due to the popularity of taurox wheel conversions.

That's it . B4. Weighed something near 20 tons.
Yeah. Tracks are not hard to get hold of 40k wise. Also includes cananlising rappier, or thunderfore cannons, a few admech models have smaller non tank track units too.

There's plenty .

Now here's another little piece of information for you...

If you want a barrel with a bit more character to it, you can find from RB Model, a 1/35 scale ISU-152 cannon. The 152mm is actually perfect size for a Basilisk gun.

I would think most gun barrels in that category would work. Here's the barrel fitted onto my Armageddon Basilisk.

I am restricted to scratch built or GW parts due to warhammer world being my main play area.

I think I'd need to know a little more about what "look" you want for your army.

A WWI army would look different from a modern army. Also, is this a "professional" army, or a poor army, or some kind of hobbled together militia?

If you want a WWI look, the old-school chariot wheels can still be had. 8 of them (two axels, with two wheel per side of each axle) makes a pretty good WWI look.

Or, if it is a more modern militia look you want, how about using the wheels from an Ork truck?

Another option is to use two 32mm or 40mm bases (with a little plasticard spacer in between for thickness) and around the perimeter add on Leman Russ track links. For the Central hub-cap area you can use a Fantasy shield (round, obviously), or some kind of hatch.

Hmmm not really going for a specific look, just something that looks rugged and fairly convincing.

I am quite liking the thought of Taurox tracks, just struggling to get 3 sets atm.

That is another good idea, just worried they won't be big enoguh, albeit should help provide a good base.
