Ok so this may be one of the more esoteric OT threads, but bear with me...
I play guitar once a week at a local pub with my dad (nominally a folk club but no real folk music takes place aside from one bloke with an annoying tin whistle) and I am looking for some song suggestions for stuff to cover. Aside from me, the rest of the group are old (60+) so have very little comprehension of music from, say, the last 3 decades or so. A case in point, I played Nightswimming a few weeks ago and was met with blank stares (I thought it was one of REM's more famous tunes).
The problem is that the other guys there generally play the same songs every single week and from their Beatles and Elvis repertoire. I try and learn at least 3 or 4 new songs per week but I am beginning to run out of songs that I know, that I can sing and play and that they will know. So I am open to suggestions please!
What I am looking for:
a) Not Beatles or Elvis
b) Relatively well-known
c) Easy enough to play - nothing fiddly (as I play and sing at the same time plus I want people to play along with the chords so no widdly gak please!)
d) Generic crowd pleasers and sing alongs
I will probably have already played or looked at a lot of the upcoming suggestions but keep 'em coming - there may be some in there I haven't considered. Also, if you can suggest some classic rock tunes that may adapt well to an acoustic translation, that might go down well. I toyed with the idea of covering Sabbath's NIB acoustically the other day.
Sure, why not! Here's what I got off the top of my head:
Don't Think Twice, it's Alright by Dylan (fingerpicking-style)
Hotel California by the Eagles
Desperado by the Eagles
Dust in the Wind by Kansas
Angie by the Rolling Stones
Maggie May by Rod Stewart
Heart of Gold by Neil Young
All Along the Watchtower -- Hendrix version
Wild World by Cat Stevens
Done some of those already but Desperado and Wild World are a good shout (although I am more familiar with the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes' version!)
Probably can't go too far wrong with just about anything from the Eagles.
A few Willie Nelson classics couldn't hurt, either.

The Laws of Thermodynamics:
1) You cannot win. 2) You cannot break even. 3) You cannot stop playing the game.

My repertoire increased substantially after I saw this video (who knew there were so many songs that used the same tune?).
And these are just the tip of the iceberg, there are about 100 more popular songs that use these same four chords in the same sequence, and then another 100 or so, that use a similar pattern. They might not all be exactly what you're looking for, but it's handy to have so many songs in the bag, if you're stuck for something to play. Incidentally, the chords here are C,G,Am,F (for your convenience).
