Hey guys, I just got back into the hobby after about 6 or 7 years, and am really trying to focus on upping the quality of my painting. To that end I decided to go for the Celestial Vindicators theme for my Stormcast. This guy was the first model and I did him in a 12 hour challenge at the local GW, and I think if I can keep this standard over the whole army I'll be in a pretty good place for a comeback

And speaking of Age of Sigmar, while these new models are stunning, I am NOT going to attempt to use a normal case for transport. In that vein I am trying to make a magnetic display board so my army can travel in style My first attempt is this monstrosity, the inserts for the minis are not level or clean, and the magnetic strips don't stick properly. I have bought some sheet metal and some foam core to have a proper go at it and will post pics as I progress

Anyways, that's it for now, any tips, criticisms (constructive please) or comments are always welcome!

Cheers,
Baru

First model looks great! You're sure to have a fine looking army with painting to that calibre

Interested to see how the display board turns out!

Thanks doc, always glad to get some feedback.

So I've done a bunch of work on the display board. This is a sheet of MDF with a piece of sheet metal epoxied onto it. I think it was just galvanized steel? Not 100% all I know is its magnetic so I bought it hahaha.

Then I moved onto the foam board layout. This might have been the most fun so far, figuring out where I wanted my commander and troops. Felt like a little kid lol.

So the task now is to cut out ~40 mm circles of the foam board and I thought I was super clever and made a circle cutting contraption (really just a piece of wood with a nail for the pivot and a hobby knife blade on the end). On the testcut everything seemed to be going ok and then the epoxy gave way on the knife skewing the angle and destroying my dreams for a quick and easy process :(

So now I put it to you guys, apart from painstakingly cutting out each slot by hand, any ideas or product recommendations would be highly appreciated!!

Cheers,
Baru

Could you just try repeated scoring around a base and then pop it out?

Get a hole cutter. Basically a drill attachment thats a circle cutter around a drillbit. Not expensive, cuts a circle, easy.

Wouldn't a holesaw be the easiest way?

Like this:

And yes, I know you're not in the uk, but I'm sure you can get hold of these on weird colonial outposts...

Cheers for the suggestions guys, I don't know why I didn't try a hole saw (and yes Teapot, we do have them in our dingy prison colony outpost )

EDIT:

So I found a 41 mm hole bit, bought it AND the corresponding holder, race home and turns out the chuck doesn't fit into my drill......sooooo had to drill out the wholes by hand. Here are the first test cuts/drills

After I cut out all the slots, I had to finish of the Drakoth slot manually witch was easy, I just used super glue to attach it to the base and this stage is done. I'm pretty pleased with it so far, I think it's a lot nicer looking than my first post. so now I just need to figure out if I should add rocks like the ones on my bases to form around the models? I might need some suggestions for that.

And of course, I hat to test how well the board works...This bit was scarier than using the angle grinder to cut the sheet metal, if one of those winged dudes fell I think I would have rage quit hahaha.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think, especially about the rocky bits. Also I have noticed my images are pretty big, if they should be smaller, just let me know.

Cheers,
Baru

Sorry for the delay, I had to move house with just 1 days notice so that was heaps of fun!

Anyways, I was strolling through Bunnings (Australia's version of Home Depot) and came across a Rustolium spray that is exactly the same colour as Sotek Green (base coat for the Celestial Vindicators)!! JACKPOT! I did a test spray on some random bits, and I have to be super careful with this stuff, just a second too long and the details clog like crazy. Also the spray has a taccy feel once dry, but luckily that goes after the wash. Without further ado, here is what it looks like after the Coelia Greenshade applied.

And here is a Liberator Champ pretty much finished (using the rustolium spray for a base coat)

And for comparison, here is my Lord Celestant that I started before finding the spray, so his base is Sotek Green.

As you can see, I'm trying to figure out what I can get away with dropping from the workflow for line units while keeping the same feel. Any comments or feedback are super welcome!! Also, I hate painting white lol

Cheers,
Baru

Alrighty then, another update!! So on the 12th of Feb, my local GW is haveing an Age of Sigmar tournament so I want to get my force completed by then and try for best painted! I still have a bit to go, I have 15 Liberators, 4 Retributors, 2 Fulminators, Celestant Prime and Knight Venator to paint....plus I need to make a new display board to hold all these reinforcements...all in just over a week, wish me luck!!

So this is all my completed models so far, I have to admit I love the way they look as a whole.

And my favorite unit of the army are these guys, I have decimated anything they touch with little loss on their side, I love you retributors!!

So I undercoated the Celestant prime with white spray...but it came out all fuzzy. He is sitting in a tub of Simple Green at the moment so hopefully that works.

Cheers,
Baru

Yeah foamcore is fiddly. I found that drawing your cut lines with a nice fine tip marker 'softens' the paper enough that it tends to guide the knife when making the cuts. And of course, use the sharpest X-acto blades you have and change them frequently. Foam and paper both dull steel amazingly fast.

OTOH, skip the foamcore and go with a sheet of clear plastic (Lexan or similar), which the fun power tools will work well with!

These are looking great.

The scheme is great and I really like the bases.

Thanks heaps guys!! I should be able to get them done for the tournament.....just need to max out my discipline!

John Prins - Thanks for the tip, I will see how I go with time. If I run short I will stick with the foam core, but I will have to try the plastic at some point.....sounds like it will come out a lot cleaner.

So, the tournament is exactly 7 days from today and I start back at uni tomorrow hahahahaha. I think I have made some decent progress over the weekend. The Celestant Prime came out of the simple green bath with pretty good results in my opinion and this is where I have gotten him to with painting.

And speaking of cool, winged heroes, here is my Knight Venator (I get so confused with these names...I thought it was Azyros for ages so I have no idea lol)

I have also finished the last 4 Retributors off for a nice 10 man unit of hammer death

And 5 of the sword Liberators are also done

To sum up, tournament is on Sunday...so 7 days from writing this post and I have to finish of the Celestant Prime, completely paint 2 Fulminators and 10 Liberators PLUS build a display board (not necessity but I want best painted dammit!)

I think the plan is get home tomorrow and just do base coats on the Liberators and move onto the Prime and Fulminators...If there is time before the tournament I will go back and wash and highlight them.

Wish me luck fellas!!

Baru

The turquoise and white combo looks fantastic, they complement each other very well.

Personally, I would focus on the Liberators first, because then you have a couple of nice models to paint after finishing a large unit. That bit of inspiration usually gets you through painting a lot faster. Make sure the display board is last on the list, because a nice display board can easily sidetrack you!

Good luck!

WarbossDakka - I took your advice and completely finished the Liberators before moving onto finishing the main body of the Celestant Prime and one of the Fulminators.

The other Fulminator has all the colours basecoated and washed so all I have to do is cleanup and a layer or 2 on him, then finish the Prime's backpack/wings and the army is done!!

Unfortunately my phone is a little busted at the moment so I can't upload any photos but as soon as someone with a working camera comes into range I will try and give you guys a look.

I am pretty pleased with the level of detail I got everything upto AND at how they look from a standard game length away. And if I don't say so myself, I am proud of myself that I got the army this far in the time I set out. This is a rare thing for me as back in the day I would start an army, paint a unit or 2 and a couple of characters and then move onto something else hahaha.

Anyways I just want to say thank you all for the feedback, tips, and support. It was amazing. I will post the finished army along with the display board and I guess that will be it? Although Stormcast do get new toys in a couple of weeks so I might be in the hole for another contingent hahaha

Cheers,
Baru

Warboss Waaazag - Thanks alot man, really appreciate it.

So today was the big day, my first tournament back. It was a bad start...I lost against some undead but I pulled it back with a crushing victory against some Iron Jawz and finished off with a minor victory against filthy Sylvaneth. All my opponents were great sports, unfortunately not one of them had a finished army so by default I got best painted....bittersweet as that was my main goal....but "default"......

And it turns out I also came first! I don't know how that happenned but I guess the store puts a big focus on paint scores or something? Anyways here is the finished army with my cheesy grin

Here is the Celestial Prime, I still have a few layers to do on the backpack but hes pretty much done. Today was the first day I used him and at 8 wounds he is squishy as hell....he was gold for the emergency situations like clearing an objective

Overall I would have to say my MVP was the 10 man unit of Retributors...they took out a full health Durthu in 1 round, a whole flank against the Ironjawz....but agains the undead guy...he knew enough to get them out with shooting. All in all was an excellent day and for a $15 entry fee I got $80 in vouchers and the Ultramarines novel....gift to a buddy lol

Cheers,
Baru
