Hello all. I will be traveling via airplane for adepticon and I was wondering if anyone has any experiences with bringing an army as carry on.

Is an army transport from sabol designs good enough? It just barely fits in the size requirements.

has anyone had any issues with magnitized movement trays? Or with anything?

I'm probably going to get some funny looks from security...

Be prepared to open it if asked (hell, VOLUNTEER to open it for inspection if there's any issue).

I haven't flown with minis since 2011 and that was within Australia, but even our domestic carry-on luggage gets checked.
I got asked "What's in the case?" and responded with "Toy soldiers, want me to open the case?"

You could call them "scale model soldiers" but there's no need to be complicated about it. "Toy soldiers" gets the point across.

I've flown with a Sabol army transport as a check-on, and I was terrified the whole time. It worked fine, but I didn't want some schlog to crush my case with their carry-on.

I'd prefer something with a hard case (Battlefoam, KR Multicase) for flying.

Flew with a lunchbox full of metal Savage Orcs and Orc Boys once.

Why, yes, they did ask me to open the lunchbox full of strangely shaped metal objects.

Just flew with 2000 points of Dwarves to LVO. Used the BattleFoam PACK Air case. It was slightly too large to fit as a carry on so I ended up checking it. I was terrified on the flight out, worrying that I was going to end up with a shattered army or that they would lose it. Arrived in perfect condition, same with the flight back.

A sturdy case is definitely the way to go.

Sturdy case, or buy shares in superglue beforehand...

Custom foam also helps mitigate somewhat, as each model is in it's niche.

This is why I want to bring it as carry on and put all other supplies in my checked luggage.

I know you want to take yours with you in the plane, but you should prepare a backup plan just in case a security agent tells you it's forbidden in the plane. It should be obvious to anyone that you take them with you because it's fragile and precious, but a pewter model with shard details (like a sword sticking out) could be seen as a dangerous object by some TSA agents…

If your models rely on magnetization to stay in place, they will probably get crushed if you have to check them.

Now? I would take it down to an absolute minimum. If at all. Security, and the airline will gak all over it any way they can. You will be lucky to see the same thing you put on the plane to come off the plane.
LAst time on, TSA stole my stuff out of my bag. They are a bunch of asscolwns. Do not take that stuff on the plane.

i have flown with the Sabol Army Transport bag at least a dozen time, over the last 15 years, and never had to check it...
the case fits just fine in the overhead...

there is usually one person at the security check who knows what wargaming miniatures are...
a quick look in the case is all that they need to see why you are not checking your painted models...

my hobby supplies always go in my checked luggage, so you don't have issues over your paint, glue, and exacto blades...

Citadel paints can be taken in your toiletry bag, but it will get some looks from security.

Otherwise take it as a carry-on, hold it on your lap if you must . Also bring superglue, or buy it on arrival, as some thing WILL break. Just hope nothing shatters...
