As the title says, we haven't had a vs. thread in a while... and for a time, these fora were filled with ridiculous arguments spanning entire sci-fi universes.

Alas, the Vs. thread I have in mind is much less grand in scale, and I bring it up here, because I am a fan of both groups, and cannot decide, or really think of "who would win."

So, without much further ado, the two sides to this thread:

the Hirogen, and the Predator hunters of Predator, Predator 2, AVP, etc.

In my mind, this fight is generally conducted in each race's "standard" way: a single Hirogen escort, and a single predator cadre.

It's been a while since I've seen Voyager, but don't the Hirogen have some pretty sophisticated scanners? Without the Predator's light bending camouflage, it really comes down to who gets the drop on the other, and one guy probably still thinks he's invisible...

They have scanners sure, but I'm not sure if they can detect stealth things, as we don't really see that come up in Voyager.

They presumably can. Predator camo is just visual, as far as I know it doesn't block heat and other emissions. If Hirogen scanners are at least as good as Starfleet ones (and they're likely better), which can detect shrouded Jem'Hadar, then the Hirogen scanners can likely counter predator camo.

The issue would be what happens next. Hirogen small arms are decent, but I'm not sure they're "kill an absurdly tough predator" decent.

I seem to recall in Predator 2 that the camo is heat based and also able to shift to block several other wavelengths as well as there is one part where they are hunting the Predator in a contained area. During that scene the predator switches its camo and also its visual system to turn the tables on people who thought they were hunting it.

Predators main weakness is their style; they toy with their prey more than simply hunt it. In that respect they are rather Klingon in that they don't simply kill and using weapons like their shoulder canon is clearly frowned upon over more brutal close combat weapons that they favour. They also have a clear "cheating" element in that they often hunt prey at a disadvantage; as a result a Predator, whilst thinking itself the ultimate hunter, is more likely to die as a result of its desire to toy with its prey.

I know it switched it's visuals over to ultra-violet, I don't recall it doing anything with camo. In fact wasn't it's camo actually disabled in that scene?

The scene was where the humans were making themselves invisible to the Predator. The Predator's helmet switched to a variety of scanning modes and finally detected the Feds indirectly because of their flashlights.
