Eye of Terror

The top ten was not any more cheesy than any other major I've seen. There will always be dominant units. Personally I think the heavy terrain helped the serpent spam. I am a huge proponent of heavy terrain so that is not a dig in any way shape or form.

You mean 13 months? Because that's how long the eldar codex has been out there, it is a june 2013 release.

Even necron bakery has only really been around since 6th codex drop which is less then 28 months.

Serpent spam is strong granted, but it doesn't auto win in a tournament such as NOVA, you can't just disregard player skill.

wave serpent spam was ALSO popular and good in their last book, in fact during parkinglothammer, they were even better! So no, that hasent been a "new thing". They haven't been NOT good for years.

Really enjoyed playing this list, ran the same thing in the invitational and went 3-1 there (including beating Tony - albeit he didn't have the spinners in his invite list. He said swapping to add the spinners was in response to how our game worked out, they definitely would have helped him a lot vs the scarabs with the LOS blocking terrain making scarabs hard to target at all before they've already made a charge).

At least you gave him one loss at the event!

Congrats to Dorner on Renaissance Man! Just coming back from vacation (which unfortunately caused me to miss Nova, despite having my army painted up in time this year!) and catching up. Kopach's reign of Nova Open dominance continues!

Mech eldar was good in 4th and early 5th, then got overshadowed by ig, wolves and knights to the point that it was not a great army at all...and remained poor until the new book came out 13 mo ago so if by good for years you mean good prior to say 2009, middle or lower tier until 2013... Then sure it has been good forever except that ~ 4 year gap.

Also that list centered around the durability of falcons more than serpents.

bet you cant name another list in 40k other than elder grav tank spam that has been as dominant for even 3/4 as long, so my point is still valid. And during that 3 or 4 years it still won tournaments. Can the same be said of orks? Sisters?

Yes I can be if we are talking tournaments in general. I can guarantee that orks and sisters have won tournaments during that entire spam as well. As for naming a single list that is tough but serpent spam lists of today are not identical to those of 4th Ed, beyond the fact that they include some serpents. I can name lists that were way more dominant than it was in 5th (it wasn't dominant in 5th) and 6th (again not dominant, if you look at results serpent spam did not win many events), I would argue that IG have been at least as dominant for more than 3/4ths as long, as they were a top army for much of 5th and 6th and still are in many cases.

Wow do you actualky think old falcons are equal totoday serpents?

They are not the same army and i really dont understand why you are bashing eldar in a tournament thread.

MVBrandt, you were teamed with Kopach running serpent spam at AdeptiCon, right? Like I said, just catching up here! Looks like it's pretty darn solid.

http://whiskey40k.blogspot.com/2014/04/adepticon-2014-recap.html

This year I'll be teamed with Tony Kopach, Neil Gilstrap, and Kurt Clauss. We're calling ourselves "Business Athletic," a play off "Business Casual."

I saw you guys there of course, and your suits did look sharp and of course you all won best generals! Is that type of list pretty much what Tony Kopach has been running since?

Our team brought four identical lists – a Farseer on a Jetbike w/ a Singing Spear, 6 Guardian Jetbikes w/ 2 Cannons, 2 Ghostwalk/Scatterlaser/Shuricannon Wave Serpents with 5 Avengers inside, 6 Swooping Hawks, and 5 Fire Dragons riding in a Wave Serpent equipped as the one above.

So, every table had 6 serpents, 2 hawk squads, 2 dragon squads, 4 avenger squads, 2 guardian jetbike squads, and 2 farseers.

I started running serpent spam at BFS when I took battle master last year at battle for salvation. That said, I'm definitely not the originator of serpents+hawks+sprinkles.

Tony took night spinners, which is atypical, and not something I've done before.

And si, adepticon (as mentioned earlier in thread) was also the last time we played together. Point? My comment was that serpents weren't good in fifth and sixth until thirteen months ago.

Sounds like this tournament was a great success again. Congratulations to the TO and Staff on a job well done.

By all accounts "Jobz a Gud Un!"

May have to try and make this one next year - just tough to get away from Family this time a year for me.

NOVA Open's annual survey went out via newsletter last night. Make sure you respond to it! We want your feedback, and use it every year!

We already have more than 300 responses, so make your voice heard along with theirs.

I got partway through it Mike, but didn't realize how long it was so had to save the rest until later. Do you mind my asking why it has so many personal questions (like whether I own a house, etc)? Just curious, as I'd expected more of a game-only-focused survey. Does this help with attracting sponsors and the like?

It's directly related to sponsor activities, especially out-industry. The tabletop wargaming player base represents a pretty hefty purchasing power, which is something I think isn't well-known. It helps raise awareness and partnership to be able to convey to the world at large that we aren't a bunch of unemployed neckbeards in our parents' basemenets, but - in fact the majority of us - are actually married or at least fully independent, successful individuals.

It IS a lengthy survey ... sorta ... but fortunately we get a really high % response rate every year regardless.

Also, just b/c some people have asked, though we'll save for now on announcements and such, but NOVA Open 2015 is 5 full weeks after GenCon (a fact I'm super excited about), on Labor Day weekend once again, Thursday September 3 - Sunday September 6, 2015.

Registrations will go live on Feb 1, 2015. We'll also be trying to reduce costs for attendees if and where at all possible.

Hey Buddy - how you doing? Like I said - will give it a try - sounds like fun.

Is it true that you took first at the Maul at the Mall in the division for those without a big one?
