Im currently building a mech vet list, and a scion list, using squat models. As im using squats im avoiding standard infantry platoons. Ive looked through the 8th leak, and vets and scions are now elites, with no obvious mechanic to make them troops.

Am i missing something, or are elite guard armies a thing of the past? Would be gutted to find that neither of my lists can be used in the new edition.

If you build using the Vanguard FOC all you need to have a legal army is an HQ and 3-6 Elites. Everything else is 0-2. If you run out of room for stuff, take 2 as you can stack detachments like in 7th.

Thanks for the quick reply. Glad to see i can use them when i finish them, dont care if they are crap, as long as they are useable. You dont know if this replaces the scion codex?

Scions are not elites anymore, theyre troop choices. Vets are now elites for some insane reason.

There isn't really a Scion Codex. You're just playing a Guard army now. (On one hand it cuts a chunk of redundancy since you're no longer "Codex: That one Elites choice borrowed from someone else's book", on the other hand there ought to be some way to get BS4 (BS3+, to those thinking in new-stat terms already) vehicles before Forge World comes along to the rescue...)

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Didnt notice that scions where troops. With that and scion command squads being a thing i can still proceed as planned, which is reassuring. Looks like it may be a little worse as an army, but havent seen how it works in 8th yet so we'll see. At least my melta squads look to have a better time dropping in.
