The thread about movement trays on the Mantic forums seems split 50/50, which surprises me, as I would have thought not that many people would be in favour. But then again, maybe that's because I don't like the idea.
However, the original rules, and I'm pretty certain the v2.0 rules too, could use movement trays easily. Cover was counted for a unit as a whole not individual models, and blast templates weren't used.
But for me, the whole idea of a lose squad formation in modern and SF games demands the movement of individual models. But I'll accept taht's very much my view.

The thing is that the Mantic forums are a skewed example at best - and probably not a great indicator of the wider feeling of gamers - especially if they want to try and get some of the disconnected/disenfranchised 40k players....

Yeah, best bet would be to not base the game on movement trays, but maybe offer some slightly modified rules for their use if possible. They *can* speed gameplay up a lot, but they definitely can also have a negative impact in a lot of ways. I could see me using them for larger scale games but not for smaller. ie. in 40k terms yes at 2k, no at 1k. Should at most be an option to use movement trays though, definitely not be the standard. If it's one of the other, it should not be movement trays.

Well put, there. As an optional rule, then fine, but not at the cost of proper rules for individual models and unit cohesion. Besides, skirmish sci-fi needs models clambering all over and inside cover and terrain, while trays work best for flat surfaces. This isn't Napoleonics, after all...

So the whole movement trays business was actually put forward by Mantic? I can't find an official source for it, just people talking about it.

first version of warpath used something like that, I think that's where most of the discussion comes from (=will they go back to that, or not?)

For facebook pics click on them to bring them up by themselves (rather than just in your news feed or in a photo album),

then right click on the picture to get properties for the link address

Hopefully they will release some official pics of this kind of stuff, the 'Guy in Poland hiding in the toilets taking photos of White Dwarf with his phone' thing doesn't do anything like as much for advertising things as some studio pics!

Although beggars can't be choosers, thanks for posting the pics in any case

As others have said, the DZ art direction is great, and the new rules/models should be awesome.

New stuff is looking good. Didn't Mantic mention that they'd have color scheme examples in these books, too?

What would have been the Compednium was due to have some painting gudies in, so I assume they've been included in the expanded books.

Thanks for the pics. Wasn't there going to be a hardcover book as well at one stage?

I had thought so too, but it seems as if that idea has been nixed in favor of multiple smaller books. A shame, I like having the hardcovers myself.

I wonder if we'll see a similar situation transpire with the Mars Attacks extra rules.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

I recall reading in an update that they were switching to several softcover books (as each of these was getting a proper retail release), but those who qualified for a hardback were getting a proper 'limited edition' cardboard slipcover to hold them all in.

A cardboard box to replace the promised hardcover book?
Nice.

Looking into it more, there was the "compendium" for $10 which was added free to orders over a certain amount ($300?). This is the thing that's been split into 3 books, and I don't think was ever guaranteed to be hardcover/limited edition - otherwise the $10 would possibly have been loss-making!

There is also the $40 "Collector's Edition Hardback", which includes the compendium + the short stories collection, is definitely a hardback and is definitely limited edition.

Okayokayokay hold on a sec, still trying to catch up. (Been moving and am only barely on dakka recently)

So Warpath is not confirmed or even mentioned by anyone in Mantic at all to have movement trays? So people complaining about it are complaining about nothing, right? Just complaining to complain? Literally inventing things out of thin air, then complaining about them?

The Deadzone Collector's Edition hardcover is still going to be hardcover and limited edition, but the softcover Compendium is still softcover? So again, there's no bait-and-switch on a hardcover limited edition rulebook? So we're _not_ going to get a page or two of people saying "Mantic. Almost." because they think it's cute?

SS brought up the question here to test the waters for the idea, seeing how people would react, so not really people making stuff up just to complain about it.

I've not seen the direct quote, but scarletsquig mentioned Ronnie talking about such things, likely in an informal session at a Mantic presentation. SS is not a Mantic employee, but he certainly could play one on TV and I doubt he'd invent something and then attribute it to Mr. Renton for fun. He also wouldn't do it just to launch into a flamewar against Mantic like some of the posters on the board, so I'd rate his information on Mantic to be fairly credible. On the flip side, it must also be said that a CEO isn't a games designer so his random ponderings wouldn't be as red-flag raising as seeing Jake or Alessio mention it.

There's enough there to warrant discussion about that point, IMO, but not enough to go "OMG THE SKY IS FALLINGS!!!!111one111eleventy" like some people will undoubtedly do. In a mass-battle setting of 100s of models on a huge play area, I think it has a role just as bases in Epic and other 15mm games do. For the size of game most people want WarPath to be, I think it becomes clunky.

On the topic of the book I've drifted out of that conversation too much to know WTF is going on anymore.

Mantic. Almost....done with fulfilling DeadZone which puts it ahead of quite a few KS projects that ended before it.

Thanks for that. Cannot decide if I like the Brokkr bike or think it looks a bit stumpy and daft. Love the rest of it though. Mantic...almost certainly making me want to buy something there.
