Today we celebrate the referendum vote of the colonies to leave the UK and the beginning of lengthy negotiations to determine the exact nature of that departure. To honor the end of the boredom of those talks we set off explosives. WOOT

It may be an unpopular thing to say in these parts, but until my last breath, I will always maintain that Independence day is the 2nd of July, when the document was actually signed, and not this historically inaccurate 4th of July nonsense.

But whatever way my fellow dakka members choose to celebrate it, accurately or inaccurately, I wish you all a happy independence day

And we gave them the English language, and what thanks did we get?

Plow instead of Plough. Armor instead of armour. Color instead of colour etc etc but most damning of all, baseball instead of rounders

Yeah, but we've also given them substantial helpings of Piers Morgan and James Corden recently, so I think we owe a debt of gratitude there.

'color' really is unforgivable though.

And we gave them Nigel Farage, and because of Brexit, we technically gave them Trump as well

In typical American fashion, just like 1917 and 1941, the Americans turn up late for their own thread

And on another note, can you pass this US citizen test from The Guardian?

I got 9/10 so that's enough to let me gain entry.

But can I handle all that freedom?

I am reminded of a How American Are You? quiz in a very old VIz

Q - your and your friends want to go and play in the park - do you need

a - a ball and 2 jumpers for goalsposts

or

b - 90 people, 7 referees, 3 tons of equipment and a trauma team

Pcikett's Charge and the retreat of the Army of Virginia occurred on July 3. July 4 is indeed Independence Day.

"b" obviously. No American would use the word "jumper" for anything other than a dude on a window ledge.

I'm celebrating the best way I know how. I opened my gun safe and selected the ones that make liberals shake in fear and Europeans hate our gun laws. Then I shot enough rounds to make an 0331 proud (along with some family). Later tonight I will watch some fireworks (with the previously mentioned family). Happy fourth America.

Which ones are those? I'm a liberal and own a 1911, a 9mm, an AR pistol, an AR in Blackout, an AR10, and an AK, and none of those make me particularly scared.

I'm failing at getting the cheap ass charcoal my wife made me buy to light, so we may have to cook our dinner in the oven. I'm failing as an American right now, and it's hurting my soul.

I'm wearing this in T-shirt format today though, so hopefully Our Lord and Saviors, The Founding Fathers, will forgive my transgressions on this day of our most glorious birth.

I feel obligated to remind you that flamethrowers are generally legal to own and affordable.

A liberal use of lighter fluid (two or three gallons...) finally got the job done.

Due to my divorce and aprtment living, I can’t grill this year.

So I’m using a cast iron griddle/grill on the stove to cook up some bratwurst, drinking some beer, and having a Captain America marathon.

Cheers!

You will always have the 10% that buck the standard. I was just kidding, no offense intended to libs or Europeans. Nice collection by the way.

I wish I could say that I was doing something awesome this year, but unfortunately, I am working until 11PM.

The good news is that Iowa legalized fireworks this year, so I turned a bunch of money into light and noise on the 2nd, and then went over to a fireworks display on the 3rd and enjoyed a few nice crispy brewchachos and hot dogs at that time.

So, despite having to work, I feel like I got in my July 4th stuff this year.

I set off about $200 worth last night. Kids had a blast with it. Our neighborhood gets really stupid about this type of stuff. I've got an neighbor who had a semi pull up to his house this week, and literally fill his garage with fireworks. That should be a fun show tonight.
