Hello everyone! I'm trying to decide on which army my Primaris marines should be. I like the fluff and rules for both, so I'm having a tough time deciding. Might wait until more models come out for them, but that could be a bit.

Bonus points if you can think of a way for the army to be alpha legion disguised as salamanders to be able to use both sets of rules for different games (not in a tournament of course) that looks good.

So how're you liking the two armies? What sorts of strategies do you use for them? Any advice or anecdotes are welcome.

Green Marines are Best Marines.

Belisarius Cawl used geneseed from all of the legions to create the Primaris marines, so there exist some from the Alpha Legion. Plus, if any traitor legion managed to sneak in their own Primaris marines it'd be the Alpha Legion. (Rules wise they're almost exactly the same as raven guard, so no problems there either.)

I use Primaris as counts as Alpha Legion, with conversion. Because I like it.

I wouldnt, however, paint them as Alpha Legion and use them as Primaris.

Personal preference.

Though that brings up a good point, there were many loyalists marines from the heretic legions, plenty of story's as well of them being destroyed by the heretics as well. Even at the final battle there were some loyalists alpha legion fighting the heretic ones, I am sure I read that somewhere. (Maybe not alpha specific, just loyalist vs heretic)

Most of those that survived the war were taken in by other loyalist chapters and despersed with the founding of chapters. But other than that you could do a loyalist legion army that follows the codex now, you could say they were sent to the distant north eastern part of the galaxy by Robert Guilliman on a quest of atonement to fight the enemy's of the Empire under the watch of some other chapter leader and told to come back when the time of need was greatest. Nothing says greatest need like the warp wall (what I am calling it). They may be not trusted but the same can be said by how many dozen different chapters of sm? I think it could be kind of cool.

Personally, I'm looking at doing primaris with Raven Guard tactics as Alpha Legion. Their rules are almost identical, but I can ally in IG and other imperials as sparatoi (Alpha Legion henchmen) and relatively well-trained cultists.

Plus, I'm not sure primaris bring anything to the table to reinforce the Salamanders theme. Sure, you'd be durable and few in number, but Primaris don't really reinforce the fire theme (outside of aggressors), and their homogenous weapon loadouts somehow makes the chapter tactic of the salamanders feel a bit less weighty. Compare, "Oh hey, I missed with a hell blaster. Guess I'll reroll it," with, "This is my snazzy lascannon that I can only have one of per squad. It's so well crafted that I get to reroll with it if I miss."

Very good points, thanks for your thoughts! Might wait awhile to build mine since I'd want to convert my captain and such for the army, and there's going to be a lot coming out for other armies until then.

Hard for Alpha Legion to be disguised as Salamanders. Otherwise, go for it! The Alpha Legion was able to re-program one of the restocked chapters, and the Primaris marines can now also shout "I AM ALPHARIUS!".

I'm guessing new Primaris stuff will be after everyone has a codex?
