Found a program that might be very useful for us.
It can generate a map from either a seed or a save and seems to even have the ability to move players. Main reason I got it was to see where the nearest mushroom biome is and it appears to be out at 3700, -3000. This is also the only one I saw while looking that is connected to a continent and not just an island in the middle of an ocean biome.
I used it on my creative map with the same seed to move myself to the location.
While it's not really such a long walk away from the spawn as I thought it might it could be a decent group expedition to travel there and take some Mycelium back for the spawn so we can get some Mooshrooms around in all the farms people seem to have now. That and free mushroom stew at the starter area.

The server is now running Minecraft 1.0.1
This should fix the server key issue. It's not clear if there is a Minecraft 1.0.1 client.

Well to get mycelium we'd first need to get ourselves some silk touch shovels. Mooshrooms are just remodeled/reskinned cows, they give beef and leather like normal cows. The REAL benefit of mycelium is that only mooshrooms spawn on it.

Yep or do a crazy 3kish long train of dirt and boredom.
The only benefit they have is you can right click them with a bowl to fill it with stew.

Err, the safety of not having hostile mobs spawn near your home should not be discounted.

Yes, only mooshrooms spawn on mycelium. Automatically Appended Next Post: For example:
This island would be completely and utterly safe from all hostile mobs spawning on top of it.
Now you see why I like it?

Looking it up saplings can't be placed on it either. Edit: Yes and it seems to commonly be formed as an island in the middle of the ocean as well.

You can easily just make an underground tree farm if you want wood on a mycelium island.

Regarding the train tunnels, putting them "underground" isn't as simple as it sounds. From what I've seen of the local nether terrain, following the landmasses would leave us with an unnecessarily complicated route that would probably be slower than walking (again).
The alternatives are to suspend it in the air where necessary, which we're doing, and to put the tunnels under the lava, which is such a dumb idea I'm not even going to consider it.

If you shear one, you get mushrooms apparently and then you have a regular cow.

I don't blame the yogscast tbh, mojang is a shambles (other than jeb) and we brits do tend to take the piss out of everything. I'm quite confident that at least some of the friction is due to normal english jokes not quite translating well/cultural difference.
PS, is everyone ok with having two circle lines like this for the rail system?
If there are no complaints I'll do a neat version then we can start working.
And a reminder, make sure to build nether side versions of all your portals! Otherwise you will link to a nearby one in the nether.
Is there any chance of linking my portals (The three in the center of the red line) to the railway?
I also have no obsidian, so my portals may not be up yet.

Nope, they know the danger of shrooms.
A house in the middle of a shroom biome with underground farming should do quite well for itself.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I think the request to have them underground may have been a misunderstanding because the routes were drawn on the overworld map (although the actual routes will be in the nether).

Your locations will be connected to the line by non railed tunnels coming off a station.

See, the thing I'm thinking of is not only travel time, but ease of navigation and expansion. If it's set up as on the map, they you have two direct-to-portal circuits and a connecting circuit. If we had a 'main' circuit under all that, a large one, with branching circuits and such, first off it's much easier to reasonably expand, since all you need to do then is add a station to another circuit, and second off, it's easier to navigate, 'cause then you can just say "Take the main circuit to Crossroads Station, then take that line to Brandywine" or some such, instead of being "Okay, go into the Nether station, and ride until you find Crossroads. That'll loop you into the Secondary Circuit, then ride that for about five or six stations until you find Mesa."
Just simpler for the future, I think. Yes, this one gives immediate gratification, but even with the branch system, it'd still be much faster, much safer, and much easier to navigate between far-flung locations. Plus, somewhat easier to design.

That would be great, actually. As it stands, kiting them one-by-one is the best option.
However, without water, I'm not sure how you'd get a farm working.

I built a portal to the museum, and it's not far to walk from the manor. I imagine you could get even closer from another station where it's up and running.

Map has been updated to 6:35pm GMT today.
Also, I included the nether.
Also, if you place a sign with the text #view it adds a screenshot to the map (next time I generate it). You can see an example at the spawn.
