Anyone have a good idea of what bits and pieces would work well for a servitor conversion (normal servitors, not battle servitors) for Adeptus Mechanicus (40k) ? The unit's rules/stats are kind of junk, but I like the idea of them. However, GW's models are a bit ugly imo, and there's only a handfull of models.

I was thinking about decapitating some of Forgeworld's Tech Thralls and giving them different heads, maybe a bare-skinned arm, and a weapon/servo arm. However, i can't find a good source for the servo-arms. The ork claws are too orky and I haven't found anything else that vaguely resembles a servo-arm.

Necromunda Goliaths with plastic card servo arms? There are a couple of how to's for making servo arms (easy and cheap) around here and on the web.
Ork bodies are good base for more combat/ heavy labor servitors. What's your bits box look like? I find just looking though mine and looking at individual pieces different ways one can come up with some pretty cool ideas.

I wasn't able to find any info about the scale of necromunda. Is it the same as 40k?

I really don't have much of a bits box yet just got out of some other games and into 40k.

I could make a 3d arm and print it at shapeways. I worked for a minis company for a bit so I'm decent with 3d - It's just easier to use something else though

Necromunda is the same scale as 40k. Got to handle the figs today - a Golaith is quite a meaty man.

No bits box?!? For shame! =)

As for shapeways, I'd say plasticard is a better and cheap way to go. Hell it's the same thing as modeling in 3D, take basic shapes and add to them until it looks the way you want it. The biggest problem I find is keeping the scale right, as it seems that it natural to go bigger.
I guess what I'm saying is, the next time your out at your LGS see if you can find some plasticard, small tubes are nice, and they have a numbering systems to figger out what fits into what. If it's catalog number is odd (say 291) it will fit into the next odd number (293), and number 289 will fit into 291. Same with the even numbers (ie 188->190->192.). Also the bits and pieces bags (cast offs) are fun and have some cool bits in them, colored and whatnot.
Other things to look for; guitar wire, cheap electrical wire, the ever popular green stuff, sprue, parts of bits from other kits (any manufacture, hey we don't judge), your buddies bits (hey what are friends for?), that one bit from the hundred dollar kit (don't judge me...), odd bits from work (trust me, they're there).
Sorry I'm rambling...

Thanks for the helpfull info MadDuck. Unfortunately, my LGS barely supports 40k or any miniatures, let alone plasticard, so I've got to get most things online. Knowing the numbering system is helpful though.

Looks like Evergreen Scale Models has a good selection of polystyrene sheets and tubes. Are there any other good suppliers?

A more plentiful (if less variety) source of plastic card is to get the "for sale" signs from your local stores.
